The BJP and Tipra Motha alliance will jointly contest the forthcoming civic polls (covering municipal council, nagar panchayat, and Agartala Municipal Corporation) in Tripura after representatives of the two NDA partners met in Agartala on November 1 to discuss seat-sharing, with negotiations expected to conclude following the BJP’s working committee meeting on Monday. However, there was no statement relating to the participation of the IPFT – another ally of the ruling NDA in the State.

At A Glance

  • BJP and Tipra Motha have agreed to jointly contest the Agartala Municipal Corporation, municipal council and nagar panchayat elections.

  • Seat-sharing remains unresolved, with the BJP expected to communicate its final decision by Monday night.

  • Tipra Motha has demanded a respectable share of seats in areas where it has an organisational presence and electoral prospects.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the BJP and its NDA ally Tipra Motha would fight the forthcoming urban local body elections together. The understanding covers the Agartala Municipal Corporation, other municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the State. The parties decided this after a meeting between representatives of the two parties on Sunday.

However, the agreement on a joint contest has not resolved the seat-sharing question. Both parties must still reach a consensus on the number of seats each partner will contest.

Nath said the BJP would examine Tipra Motha’s proposals at the party level. He added that the leadership would communicate its final decision by Monday night.

Describing the meeting as cordial and productive, Nath said discussions focused on ensuring a joint electoral fight involving all NDA constituents.

Tipra Motha Seeks Respectable Share of Seats

Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma confirmed his party’s readiness to contest the municipal council and nagar panchayat elections across the state.

He said the party had already submitted its seat-sharing proposals to the BJP leadership. However, he declined to reveal the exact number of seats Tipra Motha had sought.

Ranjit Debbarma made it clear that his party expected a respectable share in the alliance arrangement.

He particularly stressed the importance of securing seats in areas where Tipra Motha has an established organisational presence. The party also wants opportunities to field candidates in municipal areas where it believes it can put up competitive nominees.

The demand indicates that Tipra Motha wants its electoral strength and organisational reach to receive due consideration during the negotiations.

BJP Working Committee Meeting to Shape Seat-Sharing

The BJP’s working committee meeting scheduled for Monday is expected to play an important role in finalising the seat-sharing arrangement.

Ranjit Debbarma said the allocation of seats among the alliance partners in different municipal areas and nagar panchayats would be decided after the meeting.

The outcome will determine which NDA constituent will field candidates in particular municipal areas and wards across Tripura.

The two parties have also begun preliminary discussions on coordinating their nomination process.

According to Ranjit Debbarma, both sides discussed arrangements to help their respective candidates submit nomination papers on the same day.

This coordination is part of the broader effort to ensure a joint electoral strategy and avoid complications during the nomination process.

Tipra Motha Continues NDA Partnership

Tipra Motha’s decision to contest the municipal elections alongside the BJP follows its earlier indication that it wanted to remain part of the NDA alliance.

The regional party had contested the TTAADC Village Committee elections in alliance with the BJP. It subsequently expressed its willingness to continue the partnership for the forthcoming municipal elections.

Following internal discussions within Tipra Motha, representatives of both parties arranged Sunday’s meeting to discuss the proposed alliance and seat-sharing formula.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma represented the BJP.

Tipra Motha’s delegation included MLAs Ranjit Debbarma and Purnachandra Jamatia, along with other senior party leaders.

The meeting brought the two alliance partners together to discuss their approach to the upcoming elections and the distribution of seats.

BJP Signals Preference for Young Candidates

Meanwhile, BJP Tripura Pradesh president Abhishek Debroy reiterated his party’s intention to contest the urban local body elections with its NDA partners.

He said the BJP would make efforts to maintain the alliance arrangement for the forthcoming electoral exercise.

Debroy also outlined the party’s approach to candidate selection. He said the BJP would prioritise young aspirants who were willing to assume leadership responsibilities.

His statement indicates an emphasis on bringing younger faces into the party’s municipal electoral campaign.

With the BJP’s internal deliberations scheduled for Monday, the next round of discussions is expected to determine the final seat-sharing formula.

The announcement will clarify the respective roles of the NDA partners in the municipal constituencies and wards across Tripura.
