Tripura is looking to reshape healthcare delivery through an integrated digital system that links patients, healthcare professionals and health facilities while improving access to information, services and decision-making.
Key Takeaways
- Tripura presented its digital healthcare vision at Aarogya Manthan 2026 in New Delhi.
- IHMIS is being developed as the operational backbone of the state’s digital health ecosystem.
- The system aims to connect citizens, healthcare providers, facilities, pharmacies and laboratories through a common platform.
The ongoing efforts of the Tripura Government to transform healthcare through digital technology came into focus at Aarogya Manthan 2026 in New Delhi on September 25. The programme was held at Vigyan Bhawan and brought together senior officials and other dignitaries to discuss the progress and future of India’s digital healthcare initiatives.
J.P. Nadda attended the programme as the Chief Guest. Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority, also participated in the event.
The programme marked eight years of Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and five years of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
Tripura Presents Digital Healthcare Vision
Gitte Kiran Gitte, IAS, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tripura, participated in a panel discussion on the digital transformation of healthcare.
During the session, Gitte presented Tripura’s vision and experience in implementing the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS). He outlined how the state plans to use digital technology to create a more connected healthcare system.
The approach seeks to move healthcare services away from fragmented and paper-based processes. Tripura instead aims to develop a connected, interoperable and citizen-centric digital health ecosystem.
Under the proposed model, IHMIS will serve as the operational backbone of the system. ABDM will provide the interoperability framework needed to connect different components of digital healthcare.
IHMIS to Go Beyond Hospital Registration
Gitte explained that the scope of IHMIS extends well beyond the computerisation of hospital registration.
The system aims to bring multiple stakeholders within the healthcare sector onto a common digital platform. These include citizens, doctors, nurses, healthcare facilities, pharmacies, laboratories and health programmes.
Such integration is intended to create a more coordinated approach to healthcare delivery across the state.
The proposed digital ecosystem will support statewide electronic health records. It will also seek to improve the utilisation of available healthcare resources.
Focus on Faster and More Efficient Healthcare Services
Reducing patient waiting time is another key objective of the proposed digital system. By streamlining processes, the initiative aims to make healthcare services more efficient for citizens.
The system is also expected to strengthen emergency services. Automated processes could reduce the need for repetitive manual procedures and improve the flow of information between different parts of the healthcare system.
Real-time reporting will form another important component of the digital framework. The system is envisaged to generate data that can support analytics and decision-making.
Digital Platform to Support Grievance Redressal
The proposed IHMIS framework also includes a focus on grievance redressal.
A common digital ecosystem could help connect different healthcare services and improve the flow of information. This, in turn, is expected to support more effective handling of citizen grievances.
Presentation of the Tripura vision at Aarogya Manthan 2026 highlighted the state’s broader approach to digital healthcare. The vision centres on integrating healthcare stakeholders through IHMIS while using ABDM as the interoperability framework.
The initiative is aimed at creating a connected digital health environment that supports electronic health records, efficient resource use, faster services, real-time reporting, analytics, decision support and improved grievance redressal.
