The institutions serve 69,677 students. They have 797 regular college teachers. However, 325 teaching posts remain vacant.
General degree colleges have the largest share of vacancies. They account for 243 vacant posts. Professional colleges have 26 vacancies. The technical college has 46. Polytechnics have 10 vacant teaching posts.

Recruitment for 201 Assistant Professors Underway
The Higher Education Department has already started recruitment to fill vacancies in general degree colleges. It sent a requisition to the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) for 201 assistant professor posts.
TPSC has completed the first phase of interviews. It sent a list of 74 candidates from 14 subjects to the department.
The second phase of interviews is now underway. The process is expected to finish soon.
The government has also completed the required administrative procedures. Offer letters have been issued to selected candidates.
The recruitment will provide fresh teaching resources to colleges facing staff shortages.
200 New Assistant Professor Posts Approved
The state Finance Department has approved 200 additional assistant professor posts for government degree colleges.

The state plans to construct more college buildings during the next financial year.
Proposed projects include buildings for Rabindranath Tagore College in Bishalgarh, Michael Madhusudhan Datta College in Sabroom and Swami Vivekananda College in Mohanpur.
