Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha highlighted the expansion of medical education and hospital capacity, including increased MBBS, BDS and nursing seats and additional beds at district hospitals and AGMC, during a programme in Udaipur on October 28.

Key Takeaways

  • Tripura has increased seats in MBBS, BDS and nursing courses and expanded bed capacity at district hospitals and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).
  • The state aims to bring AGMC and GBP Hospital among India’s ten leading hospitals. AGMC currently ranks 131st among government medical colleges nationwide.
  • Three healthcare projects in Gomati district, covering hospital expansion and a Public Health Unit, have a combined estimated cost of ₹189 crore.

Tripura is expanding its medical education facilities and hospital capacity as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services across the state. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said the number of seats in MBBS, BDS and nursing courses has increased. Bed capacity has also grown considerably at various district hospitals and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).

The Chief Minister shared these details while addressing a programme at Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital in Udaipur today. He also outlined the state’s ambitions for its medical institutions, saying the government aims to bring AGMC and GBP Hospital among the ten leading hospitals in the country.

AGMC currently ranks 131st among government medical colleges nationwide, according to the Chief Minister. He said work is progressing towards the stated target for both institutions.

The programme also marked the launch of three healthcare infrastructure projects in Gomati district. The projects cover the expansion of Gomati District Hospital, the expansion of Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital and the development of a Public Health Unit. Their combined estimated cost is ₹189 crore.

Medical Education and Hospital Capacity

Dr. Saha highlighted the increase in seats across MBBS, BDS and nursing courses as part of the state’s wider healthcare development efforts. He also pointed to the expansion of bed capacity at district hospitals and AGMC.

These measures address two important aspects of healthcare delivery: the availability of trained medical professionals and the capacity of hospitals to accommodate patients. However, the Chief Minister did not provide specific figures for the additional course seats or hospital beds in his address.

He said the government wants AGMC and GBP Hospital to secure places among ten leading hospitals in India. AGMC’s current position at 131st among government medical colleges provides the ranking benchmark cited during the programme.

The Chief Minister said efforts are continuing towards this goal. His remarks placed medical education and hospital development among the key areas of the state’s healthcare expansion strategy.

Three Healthcare Projects in Gomati District

The programme focused on three projects designed to expand healthcare infrastructure in the Udaipur area.

The expansion of Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital has an estimated cost of ₹46.40 crore. The project aims to strengthen the hospital’s infrastructure.

The expansion of Gomati District Hospital carries an estimated cost of ₹142 crore. The third project, a Public Health Unit, will cost approximately ₹60 lakh.

Before the formal foundation-stone ceremony, Dr. Saha and Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy performed the bhumi pujan for the sub-divisional hospital’s expansion.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the government is undertaking development projects across Tripura, with particular emphasis on healthcare infrastructure.

He said development works worth ₹1,500 crore were inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid during the previous financial year. In the current financial year, projects worth approximately ₹1,300 crore have been inaugurated or launched so far.

He added that projects valued at around ₹260 crore were inaugurated or initiated before and after Durga Puja this year.

Advanced Eye Care and Free Treatment Schemes

The Chief Minister also highlighted plans to expand specialised medical services within Tripura. Work has begun on a modern eye hospital beside ILS Hospital in Agartala. The proposed facility aims to provide advanced eye care services.

Dr. Saha also referred to free treatment and diagnostic services available under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister’s Niramay Arogya Yojana.

He said these schemes reflect the government’s focus on public welfare. He added that the administration continues to work with transparency and sincerity while keeping the rights of ordinary citizens at the centre of its activities.

The Chief Minister also said referrals of patients to hospitals outside Tripura have declined by approximately 80 per cent. He cited this reduction while discussing improvements in the state’s healthcare facilities.

Udaipur’s Wider Development Plans

Dr. Saha described Udaipur as a city with considerable religious, cultural and historical significance. He said the government is developing satellite townships in Agartala, Dharmanagar and Udaipur.

The Tripureshwari Temple has undergone beautification under the PRASAD scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the project last year. The Chief Minister said more tourists and visitors from across the country have visited the area since then.

A replica of the 51 Shakti Peethas is also under construction in Udaipur. An Ayurvedic college has started functioning at Tepania, while beautification work continues across the city.

Dr. Saha said improved civic services, people-oriented development initiatives and tourism growth would help Udaipur become the state’s most beautiful city after Agartala in the coming years.

Finance Minister Highlights Better Medical Services

Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy also addressed the programme. He said the healthcare projects would help patients receive better-quality medical treatment.

He emphasised the government’s efforts to improve services at Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital. He added that improvements in the state’s healthcare infrastructure have enabled people to benefit from better medical services.

Gomati Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Debal Deb Roy, Udaipur Municipal Council Chairperson Sital Chandra Majumder, Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte and District Magistrate Rinku Lakher were among those present at the programme.
