Agartala, August 10: Tripura recorded 3,84,453 domestic tourist visits and 9,424 foreign tourist visits between January and June 2026, according to data shared by the Union Ministry of Tourism in the Lok Sabha. While the state stood sixth among the eight Northeastern states in domestic tourist footfall, it secured the third position in foreign tourist visits during the six-month period.
According to the information was provided by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a reply in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Tripura registered 3,84,453 domestic tourist visits during the first six months of 2026. The figure placed the state sixth in the Northeast.
Assam topped the regional ranking with 46,04,112 domestic tourist visits. Sikkim followed with 23,52,725, while Arunachal Pradesh recorded 6,27,084 visits.
Meghalaya reported 5,15,320 domestic visits, followed by Mizoram with 4,94,362. Tripura came next with 3,84,453 visits. Nagaland and Manipur recorded substantially lower domestic footfalls at 27,305 and 12,744, respectively.
Tripura third in foreign tourist footfall
Tripura performed considerably better in the international tourism segment.
The state received 9,424 foreign tourist visits from January to June 2026, placing it third among the eight Northeastern states.
Sikkim occupied the top position with 43,734 foreign tourist visits. Assam ranked second with 32,471. Tripura followed, ahead of Mizoram, which recorded 7,389 foreign visits.
Meghalaya received 2,516 foreign tourists, while Arunachal Pradesh recorded 2,372. Manipur and Nagaland registered 1,219 and 1,131 foreign tourist visits, respectively.
Tripura’s third-place ranking is notable because the state attracted more foreign visitors than several destinations that recorded higher domestic tourist traffic.
Domestic tourism in 2025
The latest figures also show that Tripura recorded 6,81,103 domestic tourist visits in 2025, according to the data shared by the Ministry. It also received 27,320 foreign tourist visits during the year.
In 2025, Tripura ranked sixth among the Northeastern states in domestic tourist visits and third in foreign tourist visits.
Assam led the regional domestic tourism chart in 2025 with 90,55,943 visits. Meghalaya recorded 18,48,239, followed by Sikkim with 16,54,838 and Arunachal Pradesh with 9,13,383.
Mizoram registered 8,28,223 domestic tourist visits, while Tripura recorded 6,81,103. Nagaland and Manipur reported 1,27,428 and 25,281 visits, respectively.
The foreign tourism figures for 2025 showed a similar pattern. Sikkim led with 68,992 foreign tourist visits, followed by Assam with 33,858 and Tripura with 27,320.
Mizoram recorded 11,484 foreign tourist visits, while Meghalaya registered 7,116. Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur recorded 5,425, 4,582 and 2,892 visits, respectively.
Digital promotion targets wider tourist audience
The Ministry has also revamped the Incredible India digital platform to strengthen tourism promotion.
The Incredible India Digital Platform (IIDP) was launched in its revamped form in September 2024. It is designed to engage visitors through web and social media platforms.
Tourism destinations across the Northeastern states are featured on the platform. The website provides content in Hindi, English and United Nations languages.
The Ministry also regularly publishes creative posts, live sessions and other social media content highlighting tourism destinations and products in the Northeast.
Promotional material is also being developed to showcase the region’s attractions in domestic and international markets.
Connectivity remains key priorities
Air connectivity has also been identified as an important component of tourism development.
Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme-UDAN, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has sought to make regional air travel more affordable. The Ministry of Tourism has supported the initiative by providing Viability Gap Funding under the Champion Service Sector Scheme for improving connectivity to important tourist destinations.
Several Northeastern routes have been included under the Tourism RCS initiative. These include Agartala-Aizawl and Aizawl-Agartala, besides routes connecting Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Imphal, Hollongi and Guwahati.
For Tripura, the Agartala-Aizawl air link offers an additional regional connectivity route that could support tourism movement between the Northeastern states.
