Political tensions escalated sharply across Tripura on October 31 as the nomination process for the upcoming urban local body elections commenced. While the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPIM, demonstrated early organizational strength by submitting candidate papers in Dharmanagar and other ULBs, the broader Left Front coalition lodged a formal complaint with the State Election Commission (SEC) alleging widespread voter and candidate intimidation by ruling party supporters.

In an urgent letter addressed to State Election Commissioner P.K. Chakraborty, Left Front Convener Manik Dey detailed severe disruptions hindering opposition candidates from accessing electoral offices across multiple jurisdictions.

Opposition Cites Blockades and Assaults in Subdivisions

The Left Front’s submission highlighted alleged widespread interference over the first two days of the electoral process. In Jirania, an all-party meeting convened on Friday by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Returning Officer went unattended by opposition delegates after a Congress representative was reportedly assaulted en route and forced to retreat. By Saturday (October 31), access roads leading directly to the Returning Officer’s office in Jirania were blockaded to halt CPIM candidates from submitting their paperwork.

Similar patterns of disruption surfaced in Kamalpur and Mohanpur. Candidates assembling at the local CPIM office in Kamalpur were surrounded inside the building and threatened with severe consequences if they attempted to submit nomination forms. In Mohanpur, miscreants erected blockades along key routes to keep opposition contenders away from returning officers. The Left Front attached photographic evidence of these incidents to its official complaint to the SEC.

On the first day of the nomination paper filings on October 31, the Left Front raises complaints against the ruling party.

Drawing direct comparisons to the 2021 urban civic polls, Dey recalled that opposition suppression previously enabled the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to win all seats uncontested across key civic bodies, including Kamalpur, Jirania, Ranirbazar, Mohanpur, Udaipur, Santirbazar, and Bishalgarh. He emphasized that warnings raised by opposition parties during an SEC all-party briefing on September 14 are actively unfolding.

Three-Point Demand Submitted to State Election Commission

To prevent a repeat of past electoral violence and guarantee a fair contest, the Left Front outlined three critical security requests to the Commission:

  1. Transit Protection: Dedicated police personnel to escort opposition candidates to and from Returning Officers’ offices in high-risk zones, specifically Kamalpur, Jirania, Ranirbazar, Mohanpur, Udaipur, Santirbazar, and Bishalgarh.
  2. Post-Filing Safeguards: Formal security coverage for candidates, their family members, and their residential properties post-nomination to prevent retaliatory violence from ruling party cadres.
  3. Paramilitary Forces Deployment: Immediate deployment of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) across all urban centers through the completion of elections, with armed personnel actively securing approach roads to election offices and tackling unruly elements.

CPIM Launches Full Candidate Slate in Dharmanagar

Despite alleged intimidation in several parts of the State, the CPIM made a deliberate show of organizational readiness in Northern Tripura. The Red Party will contest all 25 wards of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council.

The candidate nomination drive in Dharmanagar began smoothly at 2:00 PM on Saturday. On the very first afternoon, CPIM candidates representing 19 wards submitted their official papers to Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Returning Officer Debjani Choudhury. Party representatives confirmed that nominees for the remaining six wards will file their paperwork in the coming days.

The decision of the Left Front to contest every ward in Dharmanagar aims to signal a strong political foothold ahead of voting day. Candidate selection and grassroots mobilization have accelerated rapidly as the election date approaches. The initiation of nomination filings has heightened local political activity. Observers are closely watching how rival parties respond in field mobilization and campaign strategies over the coming weeks.
