Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital observed World Patient Safety Day 2026 on Thursday. The programme focused on improving healthcare quality and protecting patients throughout their treatment.
The special programme took place at Lecture Hall-2 of the Academic Building at GBP Hospital from 1 pm. The Medical Superintendent and Heads of Departments organised the event.
Focus on Accurate Patient Identification
Dr Samarpita Dutta delivered the welcome address. She highlighted several key areas of patient safety.
These included accurate patient identification, correct identification of patient samples, medication safety and surgical safety.
She stressed the need for healthcare workers to follow proper procedures at every stage of patient care.
Doctors Stress the Need to Reduce Errors
Dr Pradip Bhowmik, Head of the Department of Medicine, described patient safety as a critical part of healthcare delivery. He said healthcare workers must give it the highest priority.
He pointed out that routine mistakes can create serious problems for patients. Correctly recording and identifying a patient’s name remains essential, he said.
Dr Bhowmik also stressed the importance of accurate disease documentation. Incorrectly recording a disease name can create problems within the healthcare system.
He also highlighted the need for proper care during patient discharge. Healthcare workers should work together when problems arise instead of blaming one another, he said.
Teamwork Crucial to Patient Safety
GBP Hospital Medical Superintendent and HOD Dr Bidhan Goswami called for a change in the mindset of healthcare professionals.
He urged healthcare workers to move away from rigid approaches and work as a team. He said teamwork should remain at the centre of patient safety.
Dr Goswami also stressed the need for proper monitoring of patients in intensive care units. Healthcare teams must provide treatment promptly whenever necessary, he said.
AGMC Principal Calls for Standard Guidelines
AGMC Principal Professor (Dr) Tapan Majumdar stressed the importance of following standard guidelines on patient safety.
He also called for effective communication between healthcare providers and patients. He said healthcare institutions must address practices that can directly or indirectly cause harm to patients.
Following the main programme, Dr Bishnu Goswami conducted a training session for doctors and nursing officers.
Healthcare Staff Attend Programme
Heads of various departments, senior resident officers, junior resident medical officers, resident medical officers, postgraduate doctors, nursing superintendents, nursing officers and paramedical staff attended the programme.
