Agartala (Tripura), June 30: Lok Sabha MP from West Tripura and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb has sharply criticized the West Bengal government, accusing it of fostering an undemocratic atmosphere in connection with the recent rape of a law student in Kolkata.
He also alleged government’s undemocratic mindset is creating chaotic and anarchic situation in Bengal.
Deb, who is leading a four-member BJP fact-finding team to probe the incident, arrived in the city on Sunday. The team also includes MP Manan Kumar Mishra, and former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi.
Speaking to the media upon arrival, Deb alleged that the team has not been allowed to meet key government officials, including the Director General of Police and the Chief Secretary, despite formally seeking appointments.
“We have not obtained permission to the DGP and Chief Secretary so far” , he said.
“Not only are we yet to get permission to meet officials, but we are also being prevented from visiting the law college where the incident took place,” the Tripura West MP said.
Biplab Deb expressed serious concern and alleged women are increasingly unsafe in Bengal under the current regime especially in view of unabated crime against women including rape incidents.
Deb accused the state government’s such conduct and alleged this reflects the government’s “undemocratic mindset,” which he claimed is leading to widespread disorder in West Bengal.
Expressing deep concern, Deb said it is alarming that such heinous crimes are taking place one after another and that too in reputed institutions, including medical and law colleges, even while the state is being led by a woman Chief Minister.
“Despite having a woman at the helm, the safety of women in Bengal remains gravely compromised,” he commented.
He further condemned statements reportedly made by some Trinamool Congress leaders, which, he claimed, trivialized the seriousness of rape.
“Remarks by ruling party leaders suggesting that rape can happen between friends are not only insensitive but are encouraging a culture of impunity,” Deb alleged.
He expressed serious concern and alleged women are increasingly unsafe in Bengal under the current regime especially in view of unabated crime against women including rape incidents.
The BJP fact-finding team is expected to compile its findings and submit a detailed report to the party’s national president, JP Nadda, in the coming days.

The incident has intensified political heat in the state, with the BJP launching a scathing attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress.
