Teliamura (Tripura), May 30: A tragic incident occurred in the Dokhaikami area of South Maharani ADC Village, under Mungiakami RD Block in the Khowai district of Tripura, where a wild elephant was found dead on Friday morning. Local residents alerted the forest department’s designated elephant-chasing volunteers after discovering the carcass, prompting an immediate response from authorities.
Notably, various parts of Tripura witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm on Thursday. IMD issued Red Alert for West Tripura and Khowai Districts.
Forest officials from Teliamura and Mungiakami swiftly arrived at the scene. At the forest department’s request, a veterinary team, led by Assistant Director Dr. Bishwabharti Debbarma and including Dr. Srijan Debbarma, Dr. Maltina Debbarma, and Dr. Abhishek Pal from Teliamura Animal Hospital, conducted a post-mortem examination. By afternoon, the team confirmed that the elephant succumbed to a lightning strike.

Following the post-mortem, forest department officials used a JCB excavator to dig a pit and respectfully buried the elephant on-site in Dokhaikami. The incident highlights the vulnerability of wildlife to natural phenomena and underscores the forest department’s prompt response in addressing such events.
