ProMASS News Bureau: Feb 17, 2016:
JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who is facing sedition charge, was remanded to judicial custody till March 2nd by a Delhi court today. Meanwhile, defying the Supreme Court order, the group of lawyers which allegedly assaulted journalists on Monday, again attacked mediapersons and Kanhaiya Kumar when he was being produced at the Patiala House Court. Reacting to the events, the apex court rushed a team of lawyers with police protection to assess the ground situation in the court.
Earlier today, the apex court had issued a series of directions to ensure peace in the court in the wake of Monday’s violence. It was hearing petition seeking action against persons responsible for beating of journalists, JNU students and teachers at Patiala House court complex on Monday.
A Supreme Court bench expressed concern about the law and order situation, when senior lawyer Indira Jaisingh informed the court about the fresh violence including the assault on Kanhaiya when he was brought for remand proceedings. The apex court also also said it may appoint local commissioner to take stock of the situation. The Supreme Court will now hear the JNU row and Patiala violence case on 22nd of this month.
It asked counsel to tell Delhi Police Commissioner to take action against those indulging in violence irrespective of their profession. Kanhaiya has been charged with sedition in connection with the February 9th event in the JNU campus during which anti-India slogans were raised.
