September 23, 2017 : Within one week of Tripura Times (TT) report on drugs menace in Northern parts of the state North Tripura police Friday night arrested one Myanmarese national with heroin. The TT had reported that the drugs were being smuggled to Tripura from Myanmar via Mizoram.
Senior police officials told TT over telephone that based on a specific information Damcherra police laid a trap and nabbed one Ngian Sia Dong , a Myanmar national from Uricherra, about 11 kms south of Damcherra.
“The Myanmar national was a courier and we have recovered four containers of drugs , apparently heroin, from his possession”, said SP North Manik Das.
He gave credit for the ‘successful arrest’ to the officer in charge of Damcherra police station Kiran Sankar Choudhury who had actually planned and executed the operation. Later, SDPO Rajib Sutradhar was tasked to supervise the case.
The SP though did not elaborate the operation , however, admitted that due to language problem the investigation and interrogation of the Myanmar national were affected. It is likely that the police will seek help from Mizoram to send someone from its border areas who knows the language.
“This was an important catch as we now shall be able to crack the entire drugs route and the traditional and occasional couriers. A clear and specific picture of the drugs network will now emerge”, said Das.
On the question as to how they could determine that the substance recovered from the Myanmar national was indeed drugs, the SP said, the police have a kit for preliminary tests and this time also like previous recoveries it showed ‘positive’.
He said , during the last three years as many as 36 cases unfder the NDPS Act, 1985 was registered in Damcherra areas –of them 11 were related to Brown Sugar, while others were related to dry ganja and phensydil. A total of 20 persons were arrested in drugs related (11) cases and out of them five were from Mizoram citizen and now, one is from Myanmar.
“In all the drugs cases that we had sent to the State Forensic Laboratory turned out positive”, said the SP. (Courtesy: Tripura Times)
