Guwahati Dec 26: Assam is poised to enter a new era of cultural infrastructure as Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to inaugurate the Jyoti Bishnu Prekhyagriha, the largest auditorium in the Northeast, during his visit to Guwahati, Assam, on December 29.

With a seating capacity of 5,000, the landmark facility is expected to significantly elevate the state’s cultural and public engagement ecosystem.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the mega auditorium was completed in record time, reflecting Assam’s fast-tracked infrastructure drive.

The venue has been named after two towering icons of Assamese culture—Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha – honouring their lasting contributions to the state’s artistic and intellectual legacy.

Describing the project as a forward-looking tribute to Assam’s cultural heritage, CM Sarma said the auditorium represents a decisive step towards strengthening modern cultural spaces across the Northeast while preserving traditional artistic values.

Designed with advanced facilities and contemporary architecture, the Jyoti Bishnu Prekhyagriha will host large-scale cultural festivals, stage performances, national conferences, and major public programmes.

Officials believe the venue will soon emerge as a cultural landmark for both Assam and the wider Northeastern region.

According to state officials, the state-of-the-art auditorium will provide a permanent platform for artists, cultural organisations, and institutions, while also enhancing Assam’s profile as a growing cultural hub on the national stage.

The inauguration of the auditorium will be among the key highlights of Amit Shah’s Assam visit, which is expected to include a series of official and developmental engagements.

The Home Minister’s visit follows several high-profile central initiatives in Assam, underscoring the Centre’s sustained focus on the state’s development and its integration with India’s broader growth priorities.

CM Sarma said naming the auditorium after Jyotiprasad Agarwala, regarded as the pioneer of Assamese cinema, and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, a revolutionary artist, musician, and thinker, reflects Assam’s deep respect for its cultural visionaries.
