Shah Unveils Assam Assembly Expansion, Largest Sports Complex Phase I

2nd Assam Legislative Assembly complex and the inauguration of Phase I of the Khanikar Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex inaugurated

Agartala/Dibrugarh Jan 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched two major development projects in Dibrugarh.

The initiatives focus on governance reform and sports infrastructure in Upper Assam.

The twin programmes included the foundation stone laying of the 2nd Assam Legislative Assembly complex and the inauguration of Phase I of the Khanikar Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex.

2nd Assembly Complex Takes Shape

IANS Reported, Shah laid the foundation stone for the proposed Assembly complex at Khanikar. The project also includes a hostel for MLAs.

He described the day as historic for Assam.
He said the new complex would improve administrative access in Upper Assam.

According to him, the facility will bring governance closer to the people.
It will also reduce the gap between the administration and citizens.

Cost and Design Details

Officials said the project will cost between Rs 284 crore and Rs 300 crore. The buildings will reflect traditional Assamese architecture.
Modern facilities will also be incorporated.

The aim is to balance cultural identity with efficiency.

The project is expected to support decentralisation. It will strengthen institutional infrastructure in Upper Assam.

Dibrugarh as ‘Second Capital’

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the programme. He termed the project a major step towards developing Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital.

He said districts like Tinsukia and Dhemaji would benefit.

Other parts of Upper Assam will also gain from better accessibility.

Khanikar Sports Complex

During the same programme, Shah inaugurated Phase I of the Khanikar Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex.

The project was built at a cost of around Rs 238 crore.

It is being projected as the largest sports complex in Assam. The facility includes an indoor stadium and a swimming pool.

Focus on Youth and Sports

Shah said the sports complex would promote sports culture. It would also help identify young talent.

He said world-class facilities create new opportunities for youth. Grassroots talent will get better exposure and training.

High-Level Participation

The visit was part of Shah’s official tour of Assam. Senior ministers, MLAs and officials attended the events.

Security arrangements were tight throughout the programme. The state government called both projects major development milestones. (With IANS inputs)
