Death of BJYM Leader Rahul Kishore Roy

Dharmanagar : The commercial hub of Dharmanagar in North Tripura has been paralyzed by civil unrest following the discovery of the body of Rahul Kishore Roy. He was a BJP Councillor and Mandal president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

Roy’s body was found hanging in the bathroom of his residence on Tuesday morning. The tragedy struck just 24 hours after the declaration of the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election results.

While the initial discovery suggested suicide, the victim’s family has filed a formal FIR. They alleged it was a premeditated murder and abetment driven by internal political rivalry,. The allegation sparked widespread protests that have shut down major transit routes in the district.

The timing of Roy’s death—immediately following the May 4 by-election victory of BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty—raises the stakes of the investigation.

In Tripura’s complex socio-political fabric, allegations of inner-party conflicts in different frontal organizational of the ruling party often surface.

The public outcry reflects a deep-seated demand for accountability within the “Double-Engine” governance framework.  The allegations of deceased leader’s wife point out at ugly face of political rivalry and factional fraud.

Allegations of Inner-party Rivalry

The investigation into the death of the 38-year-old councillor has taken a sharp turn toward internal party dynamics. According to the formal complaint lodged by Roy’s wife, the BJYM leader was subjected to “sustained mental harassment and repeated humiliation” by a group of individuals purportedly affiliated with the same political banner.

The FIR specifically names individuals alleged to have close ties with the newly elected MLA, Jahar Chakraborty, suggesting a rift that may have turned violent.

  • Evidence of Struggle: The family claims that prior to the discovery of the body, a group of miscreants physically assaulted Roy, his wife, and his elderly parents.

  • The Symbolic Act: Reports indicate Roy allegedly used a BJP party flag to commit the act, a detail that has intensified the emotional and symbolic weight of the tragedy for party loyalists.

  • Official Response: Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home Portfolio, has transitioned into “crisis management” mode, stating on social media that all allegations—including the wife’s testimony—will be examined “without bias”.

The presence of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council Chairperson and several fellow councillors at the road blockades underscores the gravity of the situation. This is no longer an isolated incident; it is a challenge to the administrative integrity of the North Tripura district.

Agitation demanding arrest of accused

The road blockades staged by protesters have brought vehicular movement to a standstill, impacting the movement of essential goods across the Assam-Agartala National Highway.

For a town that facilitates significant cross-border trade interests, the unrest created tension among the local people, traders and passengers. Intervention of the security forces ensured the agitators free the road and normalcy is restored.

From a security perspective, the deployment of additional forces is a preemptive measure to prevent the “spillover effect.” North Tripura’s proximity to the interstate border makes it sensitive to influxes of political volatility.

The state administration is currently balancing the need for a transparent investigation with the urgent necessity of finding the truth behind the death and also take steps against inner-party squabbles to prevent recurrence of any such tragedy.

Any delay in the arrest of the “identified” suspects mentioned in the FIR could jeopardize the Chief Minister’s assurance of impartial probe.

Local observers said, “The Dharmanagar incident is a high-stakes test for CM Manik Saha’s “Fair Investigation” pledge”.
