Tripura Receives Major Medical Education Boost
Agartala: Tripura has received a major healthcare infrastructure boost after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved Rs 273.46 crore for the expansion and upgradation of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital.
The sanctioned project will increase undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats in the state. The expansion will come into effect from the academic year 2026-27.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced the development through a social media post. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda for approving the proposal.
According to the Chief Minister, the project will strengthen healthcare services and medical education opportunities for students in Tripura.
100 Additional MBBS Seats Approved for AGMC
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved enhancement of MBBS seats at AGMC from 150 to 250. Out of the additional 100 seats, 15 seats will be reserved under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
The project has been approved under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for upgradation of existing government medical colleges.
The approved cost for MBBS seat enhancement stands at Rs 150 crore. The Central Government will provide Rs 135 crore, which accounts for 90 percent of the total project cost.

The Centre has also approved enhancement of 83 postgraduate seats in 19 departments at AGMC and GBP Hospital.
The total approved cost for PG seat expansion has been fixed at Rs 123.46 crore. Out of this, the Centre will contribute Rs 111.11 crore.
Several key departments received additional seats. These include Anaesthesia, General Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Surgery, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Dermatology, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Respiratory Medicine.

Tripura’s Medical Seat Capacity to Rise Sharply
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the latest approval would significantly increase the state’s medical education capacity.
He stated that Tripura will now have 550 MBBS seats and 196 postgraduate seats after the addition of the newly approved seats.
The Chief Minister described the development as a record increase achieved during the last four years.
He also reiterated the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare services and medical education infrastructure in Tripura.
“We are committed to improve the health services for citizens as well as Medical Education for the young aspirants in the State,” Dr. Saha said.
Official Letter Issued by Health Ministry
The approval was conveyed through an official communication issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, on May 13, 2026.
The letter was sent to the Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura.
The communication approved the proposals under centrally sponsored schemes related to strengthening and upgradation of state government medical colleges for increasing MBBS and PG seats.

The Tripura Government has also been requested to sign and return the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to implementation of the approved projects.
