New Tripura State Riffles Battalion for Tripura
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the formation of another battalion of the elite Tripura State Rifles (TSR). As a result, the total number of TSR battalions in the northeastern state will increase to 16.
Officials confirmed the development on Friday. The approval has been viewed as a major boost for Tripura’s internal security infrastructure and its contribution to national security operations.
The newly approved battalion will be raised under the India Reserve category. Therefore, it will remain available for deployment anywhere in the country whenever required by the Centre.
Centre Approves Financial Assistance for New Battalion
According to an official communication sent to the Tripura Chief Secretary, financial support will be provided by the Union government for establishing the new battalion.
A one-time grant of Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The amount will be utilised for raising and operationalising the battalion.
Additionally, reimbursement for infrastructure-related expenses will also be provided. The Centre stated that costs incurred for constructing the battalion headquarters and associated facilities would be reimbursed up to Rs 30 crore.
However, land acquisition expenses will not be covered under the reimbursement package. The Tripura government has been instructed to provide land free of cost for the establishment of the battalion and its infrastructure.
The ministry further clarified that reimbursement claims would only be processed after the submission of utilisation certificates and supporting documents as per the General Financial Rules.
Eight Conditions Imposed by MHA
Officials said the Union Home Ministry has laid down eight mandatory conditions that must be followed while raising the battalion.
Though the detailed conditions were not made public, officials indicated that compliance with financial norms, deployment standards, infrastructure requirements, and administrative procedures would be strictly monitored.
The conditions are aimed at ensuring transparency and operational efficiency during the expansion process.
TSR Strength to Reach 16 Battalions
With the latest approval, the overall strength of the Tripura State Rifles will rise to 16 battalions.
Out of these, 13 battalions will function under the India Reserve category. These specialised battalions can be deployed across India for election duties, anti-insurgency operations, internal security management, and law-and-order responsibilities.
The India Reserve Battalions have emerged as an important component of national security operations over the years.
TSR Personnel Serving Across India
At present, nearly 2,000 TSR personnel, including officers, are deployed outside Tripura.
One battalion has been stationed with the Delhi Police since 2019. Another battalion has been working with the South Eastern Coalfields Limited in Chhattisgarh since 2022.
Apart from these assignments, one TSR battalion is currently engaged in providing security to drilling installations operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Tripura.
Recently, 10 companies of TSR personnel were also deployed in Assam and West Bengal for election-related duties.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, TSR personnel were sent to Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh for election security management.

TSR’s Role in Counter-Insurgency Operations
The Tripura State Rifles has earned recognition for professionalism, discipline, and operational capability.

Security experts often credit TSR for playing a major role in controlling insurgency in Tripura. For more than four decades, the state faced militant violence and security challenges.
Through sustained anti-insurgency operations, coordinated security action, and intelligence-based missions, the force significantly contributed to restoring peace and stability in the state.
The force has also gained national recognition for handling election duties and special security assignments across India.
In addition to election-related deployments, TSR personnel were also engaged during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where they assisted in maintaining security arrangements.
Strategic Importance of the New Battalion
The approval of another battalion is expected to strengthen Tripura’s security preparedness. It will also increase the state’s contribution to national-level security operations.
Officials believe the expansion of TSR will improve operational flexibility and enhance deployment capacity for future assignments.
