Gandacherra/Sonamura (Tripura): Two separate incidents of alleged family violence have shocked Tripura, with alcohol and drug addiction emerging as common factors. The incidents occurred in Gandacherra of Dhalai district and North Rangamura village of Sonamura subdivision on Saturday, highlighting growing concerns over addiction-related social challenges.

Information gathered by Enewstime Desk after speaking to Gandacherra-based reporter Ramu Debnath and verified with concerned authorities, reveals that the first incident took place at the Ultachhara Kananta Para Bru Settlement Camp. A father, identified as Lalchuan Mauma, allegedly killed his two minor children while under the influence of alcohol.

The victims were identified as 13-year-old Richika Bru and four-year-old Prismayha Bru.

Meanwhile, another incident was reported to Enewstime Desk by senior journalist Debashish Datta from Sonamura. The incident occured at North Rangamura village under Sonamura subdivision. Quoting Police and local residents, Datta said that Samir Tripura, who was allegedly addicted to drugs, attacked his father Ayakhi Roy Tripura with a wooden stick. The assault reportedly resulted in the father’s death, while the formal report is awaited.

The two cases have created widespread grief and serious concern about rising addiction-linked violence, even as the Government and security agencies are up against the menace. The killings have renewed discussions around addiction control, family protection and community-level intervention.

Addiction Becomes a Common Link Behind Two Tragic Incidents

Ramu Debnath told the Enewstime Desk that the Gandacherra incident occurred inside the family home on Saturday morning. The accused allegedly committed the act while he was intoxicated.

The incident created panic among residents of the Bru Settlement Camp. Debnath said the accused’s wife and another minor child managed to escape during the situation, but failed to save two ill-fated children.

The inmates of the Bru settlement camp immediately informed authorities after the incident came to light. Police teams reached the location and began collecting information.

The investigation was led by Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Police Officer Saugata Chakma and Gandacherra Police Station Officer-in-Charge Asim Sarkar.

Police later detained Lalchuan Mauma. Reports stated that Mauma allegedly fled towards a nearby forest area after the incident. However, local residents chased and caught him. Later they handed him over to police.

The deaths of the two children have left the settlement community in deep mourning and a feeling of a lack of safety.

Drug Addiction Allegedly Leads to Fatal Father-Son Conflict

Datta reported, in the Sonamura case, police sources and villagers stated that accused Samir Tripura had a history of drug addiction.

According to reports, family members had faced repeated difficulties due to his alleged substance dependency. Locals claimed that conflicts frequently occurred because of his drug-driven behaviour.

On Saturday, Samir allegedly created a disturbance after consuming drugs. His father Ayakhi Roy Tripura attempted to control the situation. However, the confrontation turned violent and Samir reportedly attacked his father using a wooden stick.

The injury reportedly struck Ayakhi Roy Tripura’s chest, causing his death at the scene.

Jatrapur Police Station officials reached the village after receiving information. In addition, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shashi Mohan Debbarma inspected the incident site.

Police arrested Samir Tripura shortly after the incident. He is currently under police custody.

The deceased’s body was sent to Kathalia Community Health Centre for post-mortem examination. The accused was scheduled to appear before the Sonamura court.

Community Safety Concerns Rise Over Substance Abuse Impact

The two incidents have raised wider questions about addiction and its impact on family relationships.

Substance abuse often creates multiple social challenges. These include domestic conflicts, financial stress and emotional instability.

In rural and semi-urban communities, addiction remains a concern for families and local organizations. With every passing days, the problem is becoming more threatening. Alcohol and drugs are not just financially ruining the families, these are causing conflicts, mindless violence and above all disrupting social peace. Experts often emphasize that prevention requires a combination of awareness, rehabilitation and community support.

Furthermore, law enforcement alone may not address the deeper social causes behind addiction-related violence.

Local communities frequently become the first responders during such crises. Therefore, strengthening awareness programmes and rehabilitation networks can play an important role.

The recent incidents from Gandacherra and Sonamura have once again brought attention to the need for stronger social interventions against alcohol and drug abuse.

News Analysis: Enewstime Desk Perspective

The two incidents reflect a serious social challenge beyond individual crimes. They highlight how addiction can become a trigger for family breakdown and community insecurity.

Tripura, like several parts of the Northeast, faces challenges related to geographical connectivity, economic opportunities and access to rehabilitation services. In remote areas, timely counselling and addiction treatment facilities can remain difficult to access.

From a governance perspective, addiction prevention requires coordination between police, health departments, local administrations and community organisations.

The Gandacherra and Sonamura incidents underline a broader question: How can communities prevent addiction from turning into violence?

A long-term approach involving awareness campaigns, early intervention and accessible rehabilitation services may help reduce such risks.

For Tripura, the immediate priority remains supporting affected families while ensuring that addiction-related concerns receive sustained attention from authorities and communities.
