Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha flagged off State's first electric MEMU train

Tripura launched its first electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train on Friday, with Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha flagging off the Agartala-Karimganj service from Badharghat Railway Station. The state also announced plans for Vande Bharat connectivity, railway doubling and enhanced cross-border rail links with Bangladesh, marking a major boost to regional transport infrastructure.

Agartala: Tripura entered a new era of railway connectivity on Friday with the launch of its first electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger train. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha flagged off the Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala MEMU service from Badharghat Railway Station, describing it as a historic milestone that strengthens regional connectivity and lays the foundation for future railway expansion, including the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express.

The launch marks the beginning of electric passenger train operations in Tripura following the completion of railway electrification across the state’s broad-gauge network. The modern MEMU service is expected to improve daily commuting between Tripura and neighbouring Assam while offering faster, safer and more comfortable travel for thousands of passengers.

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, Lumding Division Divisional Railway Manager Sameer Lahon, Transport Secretary U.K. Chakma, senior Northeast Frontier Railway officials, district administration officials and local residents attended the inaugural ceremony.

Tripura’s first electric MEMU train marks a railway milestone

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Saha said the launch of the state’s first electric MEMU train represents a significant achievement in Tripura’s railway development.

“This is a proud day for Tripura. Today we have created another historic milestone with the launch of the state’s first electric MEMU train. It opens a new chapter in railway transportation for our people,” he said.

The Chief Minister said Tripura’s railway journey has evolved steadily over the past six decades. He recalled that the first metre-gauge train reached Dharmanagar from Kalkalighat in Assam in 1964 before the network was extended to Kumarghat in 1990 and later to Agartala in 2008.

According to him, railway development accelerated after the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government declared railway expansion in the Northeast a national project. The momentum increased further after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Act East Policy, replacing the earlier Look East Policy.

“The conversion from metre gauge to broad gauge has transformed railway connectivity in Tripura. Today, several premium long-distance trains operate from the state, which once appeared impossible,” Dr. Saha said.

CM says Vande Bharat train likely after railway electrification

The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for supporting railway development in Tripura.

He said he had personally requested the Railway Minister to introduce better train services in the state.

“I asked the Railway Minister to provide Tripura with more modern trains. He assured me that the state would receive better railway services. Today, that assurance has become a reality with the launch of the MEMU train,” he said.

Dr. Saha said the completion of railway electrification from Churaibari to Sabroom has created the necessary infrastructure for introducing more advanced train services.

“Now that electrification has been completed, we are hopeful that the Vande Bharat Express will also start operating from Tripura in the near future,” he added.

Modern MEMU train offers enhanced passenger comfort and safety

The Chief Minister said the newly introduced MEMU service is equipped with several passenger-friendly features.

The 12-coach electric train can accommodate nearly 3,600 passengers. It is fitted with CCTV surveillance cameras, GPS tracking, an advanced braking system and an automated passenger information system that announces station arrivals and platform-side information.

The train also includes air-conditioned driver’s cabins to improve operational efficiency and working conditions for locomotive pilots.

According to Dr. Saha, Tripura is the first state under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone to begin operations of this electric MEMU service.

Bangladesh rail link to strengthen regional connectivity

Highlighting Tripura’s strategic location, the Chief Minister said the railway line has already reached Sabroom, the southernmost railhead of the state.

He said the upcoming Agartala-Akhaura rail link with Bangladesh will significantly improve regional and international connectivity.

“The rail connection towards Akhaura is nearing completion. Once operational, passengers from Bangladesh will be able to travel to different parts of India through Tripura, while Indian travellers will also gain easier rail access to Bangladesh,” he said.

Dr. Saha added that railway electrification covering nearly 271 kilometres from Churaibari to Sabroom has now been completed.

Tripura seeks railway doubling and new express trains

The Chief Minister said the state government continues to pursue railway infrastructure expansion.

He informed that the Final Location Survey and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for doubling the existing Chandranathpur-Sabroom railway line have already been completed.

“Once the double-line project is approved and implemented, the railway network will be able to handle significantly more train services,” he said.

Dr. Saha also said work is progressing on the proposed 14-kilometre railway line connecting Jirania with Bodhjungnagar Industrial Estate at an estimated cost of around Rs 560 crore.

He reiterated Tripura’s demand for new express trains connecting the state with Jammu, Puri and Gaya, saying the proposal has already been placed before the Union Government.

Railway station redevelopment underway under Amrit Bharat Scheme

The Chief Minister said three railway stations in Tripura are being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Dharmanagar, Kumarghat and Udaipur railway stations are being modernised with a combined investment exceeding Rs 96 crore. Agartala Railway Station has also been included in the second phase of the redevelopment programme, with works worth around Rs 48 crore already in progress.

He thanked officials, engineers and workers of the Northeast Frontier Railway for implementing railway projects across the state and credited the Centre’s infrastructure push for accelerating Tripura’s railway development.

Transport Minister calls MEMU launch a new chapter for Tripura

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury described the inauguration as the beginning of a new phase in the state’s transportation network.

“One train, a journey of thousands of dreams. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in Tripura’s railway connectivity. Better connectivity means a better Tripura,” he said.

The Minister said the Agartala-Karimganj MEMU service has been introduced to meet growing passenger demand for faster, safer and more convenient travel.

“This modern MEMU train service will make daily travel easier and more comfortable for thousands of commuters. Fast, comfortable and safe railway travel has now become a reality,” he said.

Chowdhury expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for facilitating the introduction of the electric MEMU service.

Tripura’s railway network expands with focus on connectivity

The Chief Minister said Tripura now has improved access to several long-distance trains, including the Tejas Rajdhani Express, Tripura Sundari Express, Kanchanjunga Express, Humsafar Express, Lokmanya Tilak Terminal AC Express, Garib Rath Express and Secunderabad Express.

Regional services such as the Jan Shatabdi Express, Silchar Express, Narengi Express and passenger trains connecting Agartala with Sabroom and Dharmanagar have also strengthened connectivity across the state and the Northeast.

With the launch of the first electric MEMU train, ongoing station redevelopment, railway electrification, proposed line doubling and the upcoming Bangladesh rail link, Tripura has significantly expanded its railway infrastructure while positioning itself as an important transport gateway under India’s Act East Policy.
