Tripura has made substantial progress in extending basic services and economic opportunities to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) under the Centreโ€™s PM-JANMAN mission. Housing delivery has emerged as the strongest area of implementation, while electrification, healthcare, nutrition and livelihood programmes have expanded across remote tribal habitations.

Key Takeaways

  • Tripura completed 17,045 of 17,210 sanctioned PMAY-G houses under PM-JANMAN.
  • More than 13,400 households received electricity through RDSS and solar interventions.
  • 30 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras are now operational, while 221 Anganwadi Centres are functioning.

Agartala August 17: The Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) has accelerated efforts to close infrastructure and socio-economic gaps among PVTG communities in Tripura. Data available up to June 30, 2026, show strong progress across housing, electricity, healthcare and livelihood interventions.

The mission focuses on basic necessities. These include safe housing, drinking water, roads, healthcare, electricity, nutrition and income opportunities. It also seeks to improve access to government services in remote tribal settlements.

Housing Emerges as Major Success

According to the information placed in the Lok Sabha recently by the Union MoS for Tribal Welfare, Durgadas Uikey, the Housing schemes remain one of Tripuraโ€™s strongest PM-JANMAN interventions.

A total of 17,210 houses have been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). Of these, 17,045 houses have been completed.

This means almost all sanctioned houses have reached completion. The progress provides eligible PVTG families with more secure and durable homes.

The housing push is important because many PVTG communities live in remote and geographically difficult areas. Better housing can also improve access to sanitation, electricity and other basic services.

Road Connectivity Still Needs Acceleration

Connectivity has also received attention under PM-JANMAN.

The government has sanctioned 268.492 km of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). However, only 3 km has been completed as of June 30.

The gap between sanctioned and completed road length remains significant.

Improved road connectivity is crucial for remote tribal settlements. It can support access to hospitals, schools, markets and government services. It can also strengthen local livelihood activities by making transportation easier.

Telecom interventions under the Universal Service Obligation Fund are also aimed at improving digital connectivity in remote tribal areas.

Drinking Water and Healthcare Expand

Tripura has sanctioned interventions covering 258 villages under the Jal Jeevan Mission. So far, 28 villages have achieved full saturation with tap-water connections.

The progress indicates that the state is moving towards wider household access to safe drinking water. However, more villages need to reach saturation to meet the broader objective.

Healthcare delivery has also received a last-mile push.

Six Mobile Medical Units have been sanctioned and are operational. These units can take essential healthcare services closer to remote PVTG settlements.

Nutrition and early childhood care have recorded wider coverage. All 221 sanctioned Anganwadi Centres are operational. These centres provide nutrition support and pre-school services under POSHAN 2.0.

Electrification Reaches More Than 13,000 Households

Electricity access has expanded through two major interventions.

Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, 12,282 households were sanctioned for electrification. Of these, 11,713 households have received electricity.

A separate MNRE solar intervention covered 1,703 households. All 1,703 households have been electrified.

Together, the two interventions account for 13,416 electrified households.

Solar systems are particularly relevant for remote habitations where extending conventional power infrastructure can be difficult. Reliable electricity can improve household living conditions and support education and economic activities.

Livelihood Push Gains Momentum

PM-JANMAN is also moving beyond infrastructure to focus on economic empowerment.

Under Ministry of Tribal Affairs interventions, 65 habitations were planned for coverage. So far, 57 have been covered.

The state has also received approval for 50 Multi-Purpose Centres. Of these, 23 have been completed. These centres can serve as community-level hubs for different development activities.

The livelihood push also includes 30 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs). All 30 have started business operations.

VDVKs are designed to help tribal communities generate income from forest produce and other local resources. They can support value addition, processing and marketing while strengthening community-based enterprises.

PM-JANMAN’s Progress Shows Mixed Pace

The overall implementation in Tripura presents a mixed picture.

Housing has recorded exceptionally high completion against sanctions. Electrification has also made substantial progress. Healthcare, Anganwadi services and livelihood initiatives have established a significant operational network.

Road construction and tap-water saturation, however, still have considerable ground to cover.

The next phase will therefore require faster execution in infrastructure-heavy components. Completing sanctioned roads and expanding fully saturated water supply coverage will be important for achieving comprehensive service delivery.

What PM-JANMAN Means for Tripura’s PVTGs

PM-JANMAN seeks to address multiple disadvantages at the same time. Its approach combines housing and infrastructure with health, nutrition, electricity and livelihood support.

For Tripura’s PVTG communities, this integrated model can reduce dependence on a single development intervention.

The June 2026 progress data indicate that the state has built strong momentum in several areas. The challenge now is to convert sanctioned projects into completed assets and ensure that benefits reach every eligible habitation.

With continued coordination among central and state departments, PM-JANMAN can play a significant role in improving living standards and economic opportunities for Tripura’s most vulnerable tribal communities.
