A political dispute over nationalism, an event on birth anniversary Fidel Castro disrupted proceedings in the Tripura Assembly on Thursday. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath raised the matter during Zero Hour. His remarks drew strong objections and led BJP legislators to demand an apology from Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury.
Monsoon Session Begins
The monsoon session of the Tripura Assembly began on a stormy note on August 27 after a sharp exchange between Nath and Chaudhury over a Fidel Castro birth centenary programme held in Agartala.
The controversy soon turned into a larger debate over nationalism and political conduct. BJP MLAs pressed Chaudhury to apologise publicly. Congress legislators and BJP ally Tipra Motha Party MLAs remained silent during the confrontation.
The Speaker eventually adjourned the House amid the uproar.
Nath Raises Fidel Castro Event During Zero Hour
Nath brought up Chaudhury participation in the Fidel Castro birth centenary programme during Zero Hour.
The minister questioned the Opposition leader presence at an event associated with the CPI(M). He said Chaudhury could attend any programme of his choice but questioned why he did not attend programmes organised by other political parties.
Nath also focused on the display of the Cuban flag at the programme.
He argued that the flag of a foreign country can be displayed alongside the Indian national flag when an official foreign dignitary visits India. He questioned the rationale for displaying the Cuban flag at a political programme.
Nath also referred to Chaudhury speech at the event. He alleged that the Opposition leader had made remarks that amounted to questioning Indian nationalism.
BJP MLAs Demand Public Apology
Nath statement triggered disorder inside the Assembly.
BJP legislators strongly objected to Chaudhury remarks and demanded a public apology from the Leader of Opposition. The issue quickly escalated into a heated exchange between the treasury benches and the Opposition.
Congress MLAs and TMP legislators did not join the confrontation.
As the commotion continued, the Speaker adjourned the House.
The incident disrupted the proceedings on the opening day of the monsoon session and shifted attention from legislative business to the political dispute.
Chaudhury Rejects Nath Allegations
Chaudhury responded later during a media interaction outside the Assembly.
He accused Nath of twisting his remarks and creating controversy around what he described as a non-issue.
Chaudhury said his speech at the Fidel Castro programme had a broader focus. According to him, he spoke about India long tradition of respecting people from different parts of the world who contributed to humanity and civilisation.
He denied making any statement against nationalism.
Chaudhury said his comments reflected his understanding of Indian nationalism. He stressed that nationalism should not mean narrow political or territorial thinking.
Vivekananda, Tagore Cited
To explain his position, Chaudhury referred to Swami Vivekananda speech in Chicago in 1893.
He said Vivekananda address beginning with “My brothers and sisters of America” reflected an Indian outlook that extended beyond national boundaries.
Chaudhury also cited Rabindranath Tagore and Dr Taraknath Kotnis.
He said these examples demonstrated an Indian tradition of standing in solidarity with people facing oppression and crises in other countries.
Chaudhury described this approach through the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”.
Defence of Fidel Castro Remarks
Chaudhury said his comments about Castro formed part of this broader argument.
He said he did not view Castro only as a Cuban leader. He described him as a figure who represented resistance, patriotism and the struggle for national independence.
Chaudhury referred to the long-standing confrontation between Cuba and the United States. He argued that Cuba had demonstrated strong national resolve despite facing pressure from a much more powerful country.
He said Indian people could respect and draw inspiration from such examples.
Flag Row Adds Political Heat
The Opposition leader also defended the display of Indian and Cuban flags at the programme.
He said both flags were present inside and outside the venue. He questioned why displaying the Cuban flag alongside the Indian flag should become a political controversy.
Chaudhury also turned the allegation back on the BJP. He alleged that BJP workers had failed to display the national flag on some occasions and questioned the ruling party decision to lecture the CPI(M) on patriotism.
Chaudhury Questions Assembly Conduct
Chaudhury also criticised Nath for raising the matter during Zero Hour.
He questioned why an event held outside the Assembly had become a subject of discussion inside the House.
According to Chaudhury, the Assembly should focus on issues affecting the people and the state. He suggested that the minister had used Zero Hour to create a political controversy instead of addressing substantive public issues.
The dispute highlighted the sharp political divide between the government and Opposition on nationalism, international solidarity and political symbolism.
With the Speaker forced to adjourn the House amid the uproar, the Fidel Castro event controversy became the first major flashpoint of the monsoon session.
