At the 59th Engineers’ Day celebration in Agartala, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha urged engineers and engineering colleges to take a leading role in implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047 and a developed Tripura.

Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on September 15 said engineers have a special responsibility in building a developed India and a developed Tripura. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed strong faith in the skills and work of engineers while setting the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Saha made the statement while inaugurating the 59th Engineers’ Day celebration at Pragya Bhavan. He urged engineers and engineering colleges across the country to play an active role in implementing the Prime Minister’s ideas and plans.
The Chief Minister said engineers can make a major contribution to improving people’s lives. Their innovations can also help raise living standards across the country and in Tripura.
Focus on Infrastructure and Modern Technology
Saha said the state government has placed special emphasis on infrastructure development. He also highlighted the importance of completing development projects during the winter months.
According to the Chief Minister, Tripura’s climatic conditions make the four winter months an ideal period for various development works. He urged departments to use this period effectively for project implementation.
He also stressed the need to adopt modern methods and advanced technology based on project requirements.
Saha pointed to several modern construction works that have received recognition across the world. He specifically mentioned the Chenab Rail Bridge as an example of advanced engineering and construction.
Engineers Driving Change in Tripura
The Chief Minister also highlighted the contribution of engineers to Tripura’s development. He said proper planning and effective implementation have brought major changes to the state’s infrastructure.
Saha mentioned the introduction of e-office management from the state Assembly to the panchayat level. He also referred to the growing use of solar power and the development of a ring road under the Bharatmala project.
He said such initiatives demonstrate the importance of engineering expertise in the state’s development process.
“Engineers are the backbone of India’s development,” Saha said.
M. Visvesvaraya Remembered
The Chief Minister also highlighted the contribution of M. Visvesvaraya to modern India. He spoke about Visvesvaraya’s professional career and his contribution to technology and engineering.
Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, who attended the event as the guest of honour, also praised Visvesvaraya’s role in advancing India in technology and engineering.
Public Works Department Secretary Kiran Gitte and Rural Development Department Secretary Abhishek Singh addressed the gathering. IIT Kharagpur Director Dr. Suman Chakraborty also spoke at the programme.
Engineers and Faculty Honoured
The programme also featured awards for engineering professionals and teachers.
Saha honoured five professors with awards for Best Faculty of Engineering Colleges. Five engineers also received recognition as Best Engineers.
Engineers Chinmoy Debnath and Shibir Debbarma received the Engineer of the Year 2026 award. The Chief Minister presented the awards and honours to them.
Saha also announced two naming decisions linked to the Institution of Engineers. He said the site earmarked for the Institution of Engineers’ office on VIP Road would be named IEI Land.
He also announced that the bus stand near the Housing Board would be renamed IEI Bus Stand.
Tributes and Blood Donation Camp
Before the main programme, Saha and other guests paid floral tribute to M. Visvesvaraya.
The Chief Minister later visited a blood donation camp organised as part of Engineers’ Day celebrations. He encouraged the blood donors and appreciated their participation.
PWD Chief Engineer Anup Kumar Das delivered the welcome address. PWD Joint Secretary Rajib Pal and other officials also attended the programme.
Parmananda Sarkar Banerjee, chairman of the Tripura State Branch of the Institution of Engineers, delivered the vote of thanks.
The Engineers’ Day programme highlighted the growing role of engineering expertise, innovation and technology in Tripura’s infrastructure and development efforts.
