The CTI warned that the Ramlila Maidan rally by the INDI Alliance could trigger a huge commercial breakdown during the pre-diwali across Central and Old Delhi,

At a Glance

  • Massive Closures Expected: Nearly 2.5 lakh of the 3 lakh shops within a 5 km radius of Ramlila Maidan could remain shuttered.
  • Logistics Freeze: Goods movement across a 10 km radius faces heavy disruption, stopping around 5,000 supply trucks daily.
  • Huge Economic Stake: Daily commercial activity worth ₹10,000 crore to ₹12,000 crore across 20 key markets hangs in the balance.
Delhi’s commercial heart faces an unprecedented breakdown as local business leaders warn of severe economic damage right in the middle of the critical festive season.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) announced that the INDI Alliance’s massive political gathering at Ramlila Maidan threatens to paralyze retail operations across the capital.
Business representatives project that as many as 2.5 lakh commercial units near the venue will keep their doors shut, grinding up to 80 percent of regional commerce to a complete standstill.

Market Closures and Festive Panic

Panic and uncertainty have quickly gripped both store owners and prospective shoppers across Central and Old Delhi.
The trade organization has dispatched its fourth written communication to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to highlight these growing operational risks.
While Gandhi released a video message asking rally participants to patronize local vendors, trade representatives note that real-world conditions prevent any practical shopping.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal stressed that fear of chaos will force nearly 2.5 lakh of the 3 lakh stores within five kilometres of Ramlila Maidan to stay closed.
He pointed out a basic contradiction in the situation: if storefronts stay shuttered out of necessity, rally participants will find nowhere to spend their money.
Addressing political speculation, Goyal firmly dismissed allegations that merchants were acting on behalf of the BJP.
He stated that roughly 100 major market federations pushed for a event deferral solely to protect their earnings during the peak festive rush.
He emphasized that these trading bodies hold a completely neutral political stance and care only about safeguarding their livelihoods.

Supply Chain Breakdown and Gridlock

The disruption extends far beyond retail storefronts into the city’s broader logistics channels. Freight and cargo networks operating within a 10-kilometre perimeter of Ramlila Maidan face a complete freeze, halting standard loading and unloading procedures.
Under normal circumstances, roughly 5,000 trucks and utility vehicles deliver products every day from 56 major industrial clusters—including Narela, Bawana, Okhla, Mayapuri, Mundka, and Udyog Nagar—into these central markets.
This traffic halt has choked the entire regional supply chain. Essential inventory intended specifically for Dhanteras shoppers remains trapped inside warehouses rather than reaching retail counters.
Furthermore, regional customers from nearby hubs like Sonipat, Panipat, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida, Meerut, Bahadurgarh, and Jhajjar are expected to avoid Delhi completely due to anticipated road closures and market shutdowns.
Parking logistics present another massive hurdle. Goyal questioned how the capital’s infrastructure will absorb the estimated 15,000 to 20,000 buses, cars, and tempos transporting rally participants.
Concentrated vehicle movement along major routes like JLN Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Netaji Subhash Marg, Ajmeri Gate, and Chandni Chowk Road risks triggering severe vehicular gridlock across the entire region.

Staggering Losses for Delhi’s Ecosystem

The financial stakes remain exceptionally high for the national capital. The trade association estimates that this paralysis threatens daily business turnover worth ₹10,000 crore to ₹12,000 crore across 20 key commercial centers.
November 1 serves as a critical operational date for festive inventory setup, directly leading into Dhanteras on November 6 and Diwali on November 8.

Ultimately, this disruption puts the financial stability of roughly 20 lakh business owners and 75 lakh workers tied to the trading ecosystem in jeopardy.
The CTI reiterated that it does not oppose political rallies in principle. However, the group urged leaders to ensure open roads and clear transport networks so that public movement and commercial activity can continue uninterrupted. (Edited by Enewstime Desk)
