Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh inaugurated the weeklong programme at Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal and flagged off a Cyclothon involving around 200 participants. The campaign, organised by the state government from November 1 to 7, seeks to make sustainable living an integral part of everyday life.

The initiative focuses on raising environmental awareness and encouraging people to take practical steps towards protecting natural resources. It also highlights the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

Mission LiFE at the Centre of Environmental Campaign

Addressing the gathering, Khemchand Singh said the campaign draws inspiration from Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mission LiFE seeks to promote environmentally responsible lifestyles through simple but meaningful changes in people’s daily habits. The initiative encourages individuals to make conscious choices that reduce environmental damage and support sustainable development.

The Chief Minister urged citizens, particularly young people, to incorporate eco-friendly practices into their everyday routines. He stressed that environmental protection requires active participation from all sections of society.

He identified water and energy conservation, reducing waste, avoiding single-use plastics and maintaining cleanliness as practical measures that everyone can follow.

According to the Chief Minister, these seemingly small actions can collectively make a significant contribution to environmental conservation.

He also encouraged people to recognise their individual responsibility towards protecting natural resources rather than viewing environmental preservation solely as a government obligation.

Manipur’s Natural Resources Need Protection

Highlighting the state’s ecological wealth, Khemchand Singh said Manipur is endowed with rich biodiversity, extensive green forests, rivers and wetlands.

He described these natural resources as invaluable assets that require sustained protection and preservation. Their conservation remains essential to ensuring that future generations can benefit from the state’s ecological heritage.

The Chief Minister emphasised that protecting the environment must become a shared responsibility. He called for greater public awareness and coordinated efforts to safeguard the state’s natural resources.

He also stressed that environmental conservation should not remain limited to occasional campaigns or special programmes. Instead, people must integrate sustainable practices into their regular activities.

The Chief Minister said individual contributions, however small, could produce substantial positive results when people work together.

He appealed to citizens to join hands in building a cleaner, greener and healthier Manipur for present and future generations.

Government Departments and Institutions Urged to Participate

Khemchand Singh called on government departments, educational institutions, local bodies and community organisations to actively participate in the seven-day campaign.

He urged these institutions to spread awareness about Mission LiFE and encourage people to adopt environmentally responsible habits.

The Chief Minister stressed that coordinated participation would help carry the campaign’s message beyond the scheduled weeklong programme.

Educational institutions and community organisations, in particular, can play an important role in encouraging young people and local communities to take greater responsibility for environmental protection.

He called for sustained collective efforts to make conservation an integral part of public life.

Around 200 Cyclists Join Environmental Awareness Drive

The launch programme also featured an environmental protection pledge and a sapling plantation drive.

Khemchand Singh administered the pledge to participants, reaffirming the importance of individual and collective responsibility towards nature conservation.

He subsequently joined other distinguished guests in planting saplings at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.

As part of the campaign, the Chief Minister flagged off around 200 cyclists from Khuman Lampak Stadium.

The cyclists proceeded through Khuyathong Road and Babupara, covering areas in Imphal West and Imphal East districts. They later returned to the multi-sports complex in the state capital.

The Cyclothon formed an important part of the launch programme, using public participation to spread awareness about sustainable lifestyles and environmental responsibility.

Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, senior government officials, students and other participants attended the programme.

The November 1–7 campaign is expected to reinforce the message that environmental conservation depends not only on government initiatives but also on responsible everyday choices and sustained participation from citizens. (Edited by Enewstime Desk)
