September 11, 2018: Terrible situation prevailed after one motorist died in a road accident in Khowai area and jawans of TSR 10 battalion proved to be ‘incapable’ of handling mob violence efficiently.
Sources said, in a head-on collision with a Tulashikhar bound brick loaded Tripper vehicle (TR01-N-1669) one Takhirai Debbarma (28) was critically injured. The incident occurred at Goltilla School area under Khowai. Takhirai succumbed to injuries while he was being taken to hospital. Death of Takhirai sparked off anger among the local people.
Eyewitness said, “Local people chased the Tripper vehicle and sensing trouble the driver, attempted to take the vehicle to nearby 10 bn TSR camp. Before the driver reached TSR camp, mob got hold of vehicle and set the vehicle on fire outside the TSR camp premises”. Mob also thrashed the driver and three labourers. Badly assaulted, the driver and labourers took shelter in TSR camp.
“The DSP Parshun Tripura and OC Uttam Debbarma were present in the camp but failed to react properly in time. Mob also ransacked the TSR camp while the jawans remained mute spectators. It appears the forces were under prepared and henceforth were incapable of handling such kind of mob violence”, sources alleged.
Later, SP Khowai Krishnendu Chakravertty rushed to the spot with re-enforcement and brought the situation under control by dispersing the mob.
