Agartala, April 03, 2019: To promote Electric Vehicles (EVs), the Centre has asked all state governments to exempt e-vehicle owners from Registration Fee, Road Tax and Permit Waiver. This is part of the Centre’s initiative to popularise usage of electric vehicles in the country. The government’s policy think tank, Niti Aayog, on October 18, 2018 issued a notification to state government towards mass adoption of commercial EVs.
A senior government official said, “The Centre has asked all states to do away with both Registration fee as well as Road Tax and Permit Waiver to incentivise the public to purchase them. The goal is to have at least 30 percent of the vehicles plying in the country in 2031 as e – vehicles”.
“Niti Aayog officials also urgently called upon all states to put in place an e-mobility policy at the earliest which Karnataka has already done,” he added. Karnataka became the first state in India to adopt the State Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2017.
“While Karnataka does not levy any Road Tax on e-vehicles, the state levies Rs 500 as a one-time registration fee for four-wheelers and Rs 300 for two-wheelers,” an official from the transport department said. The state is yet respond to it, he added.
