ProMASS News Bureau: Feb 4, 2016:
Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma expressed optimism on Feb 3 that the state will continue its growth momentum. He said the focus of his government has always been to increase the development index of the state and the priority is to improve the livelihood of the people before the state celebrates its 50th anniversary. A survey conducted by IndiaSpend showed that Meghalaya had emerged as the fastest-growing state in the Northeastern region with a growth rate of 9.7 per cent in 2013-14. Other states in the Northeast – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura – are also growing rapidly. The combined opposition – Meghalaya People’s Front, however questioned the authenticity of the projections. United Democratic Party leader Paul Lyngdoh said the projections were “only statistics”. National People’s Party leader and former Meghalaya Finance Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that GSDP alone cannot indicate the overall growth of a state, but sustainable growth that will bring benefits to the state in the long run.
