Agartala, September 27, 2019: The High Court of Tripura has banned animals and birds sacrifice in temples across the State with immediate effect.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Arindam Lodh said, “No person including the state shall be allowed to sacrifice of any animal/bird within the precincts of any one of the temples within the state of Tripura”. The Division Bench was hearing a PIL filed by former District Judge Subhash Bhattacharjee raising concern about animals sacrifice at religious places including famous Maa Tripureswari Temple and Chaturdash Devta temples.
The Court observed, “Government of Tripura has proposed development of Devi Tripureshwari temple as a favorite international tourist destination. People of all beliefs and faiths are likely to visit in large number. Anyone of the devotees desirous of offering any animal out of personal faith, belief or desire, may do so, but, shall take back the animal and under no circumstance any activity of animal sacrifice shall be permitted to be carried out. Prudently, the Government can earmark land for opening shelter home for rearing such livestock”.
The Bench also asked the Chief Secretary to install CCTV cameras in Tripura Sundari and Chaturdash Devta temples and keep a tab on the footage on monthly basis. The Court also ordered all DMs and SPs to ensure the ban is effectively enforced.
It may be mentioned here that the animal sacrifice in the religious places like Tripureswarai temple are conducted as per the merger agreement of the royal Tripura with Union Government.
