Agartala, October 02, 2019: As stage is ready for a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, Tripura is hoping for positive results pertaining to waterways, tea export to Bangladesh etc.
Speaking at a programme today, the Chief Minister said, “In her way home after attending the United Nations meet, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 3 and it is expected that during this meeting a wide range of bilateral issues will be discussed including issues relating to Tripura.”
The Chief Minister who is also leaving for New Delhi tomorrow to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister tomorrow, also added, the under progress projects between Tripura and Bangladesh will come up for discussion in the meeting. This meeting, he felt, will bring a number of fruitful news for the state.
What Tripura is hoping for?
In the colonial period, he said, Chittagong port is constructed for better transportation in the entire Eastern region. But, due to the political differences—partition, the port went out of operation. In tomorrow’s meeting, the issue of resuming services in the port will also to be discussed.
“We can expect that an MOU will be signed between both the countries regarding the operation of Chittagong port” the Chief Minister continued.
This will be a “historic step”, the state will get the maximum benefit out of it if the Chittagong port starts to operate once again, Deb observed. He also informed the gathering that due to this MOU, the state would get the access of becoming the corridor of entire North East region.
Speaking on the inland waterways project, he said, we are also contemplating to finalize a deal between Bangladesh and Tripura for export and import through Gomati. Altogether, 13 products have been included in the protocol route. Setting up jetty and other remaining works are being done in full swing, he added.
He said that he would also convince Hasina for exporting Tripura tea in Bangladesh. “I believe, Tripura tea has all the potential to score the market of Bangladesh. And I will convince the Bangladesh Prime Minister of Tripura tea” the Chief Minister added.
