Agartala, March 05, 2020: The five major NGOs of Jampui Hill under North Tripura District today staged a Vehicle Rally in support of two demands pertaining to Bru Settlement Issue. The rally started from both north (Vaisam) and south (Phuldungsei) sides of the Hill and converged midpoint at Jampui Hill RD Block at Vanghmun village. The leaders of the participating NGOs submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister’s office. The BDO, Kishore Sarkar received the document on behalf of the government.  The rally was peaceful and well participated. The five NGOs are Jampui Hill Mizo Convention (MC), Tripura Group Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Convention Youth Wing (MCYW), Jampui Block Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), and Jampui Area Mizo Upa Pawl (MUP).

Charter of demands

The NGOs demanded settlement of displaced Mizoram Brus outside of Kanchanpur Sub-Division in the North Tripura and at places far from our Mizo traditional boundaries of Jampui Hill.

General Secretary of Mizo Convention Dr Zairemthiama Pachuau explained and said agitating NGO representatives, several times in the past, pointed out historical, social and circumstantial aspects of migration of Brus from Mizoram into Tripura and their subsequent activities after migrating to Tripura. Based on previous activities of migrated Brus, Mizo community of Jampui Hill called for total avoidance of Bru settlement anywhere near Jampui Hill, Dr Z Pachuau said.

“Non-compliance to this request of ours can result in severe demographic imbalance, land crisis, social disturbance, communal conflict, and damage to environment, amongst others”, Dr Pachuau said.

Provision of rehabilitation package to all displaced Mizo families from Sakhan, Tualsen and Upper Dosda due to the 1997 Bru violence. Mizo community of Jampui Hill demanded that the rehabilitation package should be in line with the one had been provided to the displaced Mizoram Brus.

No hatred, only peace

Dr Zairemthiama Pachuau, however, maintained, “We have been extending heartfelt help to displaced Mizoram Brus since they flee Mizoram in 1997. We do not hate them. We just want our peace and we do not hate any ethnic group – all we want is to live peacefully in our ancestral land. We will not accept any infringement upon our rights and our survival. The government must listen to us and fulfil our demands. This land – Jampui Hill – is our Mother and is not interested in adopting one. Moreover, our land is not for political auction.”
