Agartala, March 15, 2020: Long cherished expectations of ‘Rabindra-Anuragi’ of Tripura – recognition of role of Tripura Kings by Viswa Bharati – seems to have brightened as Tripura Government expressed its keenness to take initiatives so that the contributions of Tripura’s Kings are recognized by Visva Bharati University. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said this when a delegation of Purvaudaya, an apolitical NGO, led by Alka Sinha (president) went to meet him at his residence today.

Assurance from Tripura CM

During meeting with Deb, the Purvaudaya delegates placed a demand seeking government initiatives for recognition of former Tripura Kings by Visva-Bharati University.

During discussions, the Purvaudaya delegation informed the Chief Minister that on last Feb 21, 2020 a team the organization led by General secretary Niti Deb had visited Viswa Bharati at Santiniketan in West Bengal and called on Vice Chancellor of Visva-Bharati Prof. Bidyut Chakrabarty.

The delegation also informed the Chief Minister that the Vice Chancellor gave a patient hearing to their demands and expressed his desire to take some initiatives in this regard.

The Chief Minister in his response to the Purvaudaya delegates said, “Our Govt is keen and already working to take forward the ideals and contributions of the former Tripura Kings and will take necessary steps to meet the demand.”

The delegates also included Purvaudaya vice president Biswajit Debbarma, joint secretary Manas Pal, treasures Sananda Saha, and two members- Hrishie Raj and Bulti Das.

Notably, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore had a deep bond with Tripura and Kings of Tripura. Even before Tagore became famous, Maharaja Birchandra Manikya Bahadur recognized his talent. Tagore was just 20 years old at that time. Moreover, Kings of Tripura made significant contributions in Viswa Bharati, Shantiniketan.

Led by secretary of Purvaudaya, Niti Deb, a team in a written memorandum had requested the Vice Chancellor to take appropriate steps so that the contributions of Tripura Kings from Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya Bahadur to Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur are properly and adequately recognized by the Visva-Bharati.

The delegates also mentioned, apart from recognizing talents in young Rabindranath, Tripura Royals provided regular financial assistance since the inception of Santiniketan in 1901 . The Royal Tripura grants to Santiniketan and liberal scholarships of Rs 1000 continued for almost 50 years beginning from 1901 to 1949 till the merger of the State with the Union of India.
