West Tripura Police have issued stern warning to people involved in using social media platforms with dubious intentions.
In a press meet on Wednesday, West Tripura Police Superintendent Manik Das warned the errant people involved in mishandling social media with intentions to incite tension or panic in the society or else to defame public figures.
“Tripura Police will not tolerate negative use of social media and for any violation strong steps will be taken”, said Das.
Referring to two cases which had been solved due to swift action taken by the police, he said, “On Wednesday morning, we have detained one Kuldeep Chakraborty from AD Nagar area. He has, using his fake account, posted some content that contained derogatory remarks against Mathua community people of West Bengal. Such remarks can further incite communal tension and people of Tripura residing in outer states may face trouble for this menace. The police will take action whenever such fake posts are made in social media”.
Das also said, “One minor has been detained for making a fake twitter post, identical to chief Minister’s official twitter handle, viral yesterday. We are putting enough efforts to stop people inviting dire consequences through spreading such troublesome information”. Sources said, the minor boy got bail from the juvenile court today.
According to Das, these kinds of social media posts not only trigger panic but also unsettle the administration. With growing use of social media, people consume such stories and then it becomes hard for the administration to resolve the problems. The police will now unleash strict actions against such activities in social media, he added.
He also informed media that more than 5000 people from several parts of the district had been detained or arrested as a preventive measure during the lockdown period. And the police also collected Rs 30 lakh as penalty for breach of lockdown norms and restrictions imposed by the government in view of the Covid 19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, as per the last report gathered Kuldeep Chakraborty, arrested for circulation of derogative post targeting Mathua community, was sent to jail custody till August 4 next.
