The Rastriya Bal Swastha Karyamkram (RBSK) under the National Health Mission has brought cheers to a family of a deaf and dumb girl child at Teliamura in Tripura. With the initiative of Teliamura Sub-division Hospital, the girl, Adrija Sarkar underwent high-cost Cochlear Implant surgery at a private hospital recently.
Amidst Covid19 pandemic, efforts of the medical staff of Teliamura Hospital led by Dr Alok Debnath and Dr Sanghamitra Das and also the role of NHM invited praises from all concerned, especially from Adrija’s family.
Adrija belongs to a financially weak family and she hails from Maiganga Colony area. This village comes under Teliamura in Khowai district of Tripura. The four-year and nine months old Adrija – who lost her mother earlier –was born deaf and dumb.
Bharat Sarkar, father of the baby said, “A medical team of RBSK made a routine visit at Maiganga Colony Anganwadi Center to check up the health of kids. The team also examined my daughter and initiated steps to ensure proper treatment for my daughter under the Scheme”.
After a series of diagnostic tests, doctors came to the conclusion that the kid needed Cochlear Implantation surgery.
“This was a high-cost medical procedure and shouldering the expenditure for such surgery was way beyond the capability of the family”, hospital sources said.
“At this juncture, successful implementation of health related welfare schemes of the Government of India in Tripura came into play. The girl underwent complicated surgery under the RSBK. As a result, the poor family need not bear the expenses. Around Rs 8 lakh were spent and the entire amount will be paid under NHM by the Government”, sources said and added that Adrija is doing well after the surgery and progressing smoothly in the process of listening and speaking.
“It seems Adrija has got a new lease of life. All of us are happy. Entire Maiganga Colony area is hailing the dedicated and empathetic attitude of the medical staff. The wonder of medical science came within our reach owing to Government schemes”, Bharat Sarkar said.
