A group of unidentified persons blocked the road at Jurichhara area with trees under Unakoti district in Tripura on Thursday without spelling out reasons or claiming responsibilities.
Trees were put on the road in such a manner the blockade cut off the road link between an indigenous dominated village and a Bengali dominated area. The road blockade sparked tension and panic among both the communities. As the report of the blockade spread, people of both the communities assembled at the spot and tension ran high.
Local sources said, “The blockade was placed on the road preventing indigenous people from entering Bengali dominated area and vice versa”. It remains a mystery as to who put up the blockade. However, the administration swung into action promptly before the situation spilt out of hand. “A large posse of security personnel from Fatikroy PS reached the spot to quell the simmering tension”, sources said.
OC of the Fatikroy PS Bibhas Das held talks with people of both sides of the blockade and removed the blockade. In view of the tension and panic among the villagers, the OC decided to hold a meeting on Friday with the representatives of both communities.
“A meeting will be held to dispel doubts and tension tomorrow. The meeting is expected to bring out the reason behind the blockade and persons behind the putting up the blockade”, local sources commented.
Even as the administration is keeping a close eye on the area, tension and uncertainties among the inhabitants are palpable. Locals are hoping that tomorrow’s meeting will be able to dispel the tension and ensure sustainable peace in the area.
