ONGC signs another MoU for Bio-village in Tripura

In attempt to make villages of Tripura self-sufficient and people self-reliant, the State Government has accorded importance in setting up Bio-villages. As part of the plan, a MoU was signed on Thursday between the Bio-technology department and ONGC to Bio-Village programme would be implemented at Barkurbari village at Amtali Village Council under Charilam.

To this end, a programme was held at State Pollution Control Board office in which Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma along with ONGC Asset Manager, Director of the Bio-technology Department and other senior officials were present.  

Notably, already three Bio-Village programme are running in Tripura with the financial assistances of Bio-technology department and ONGC and works for two more under Charilam are undergoing.

Speaking on the occasion, Jishnu Dev Varma reiterated State Government’s efforts to harness socio-economic condition of the State through Bio-village programmes. He said the State Government is focusing on cultivation using bio-technology and taking steps to encourage farming communities of the State. Dev Varma hailed the initiative of Bio-technology department and ONGC in setting up Bio-villages and expressed hope that villagers would be avail the opportunity to attain self-reliance.  

Bio-village programme envisages pollution free ambience and stress on using Bio-fertilizers and Bio-fuel. This would ensure that residents would not have to rely much on any agency or supplier for fertilizers and cooking fuel supply.  

Apart from this, the programme helps residents of a Bio-Village to earn a decent livelihood through multiple farming activities. In most of the cases, Bio-Village programme lays importance on integrated farming to insulate the farmers from any losses due to unforeseen factors. Mashroom cultivation, goatery, poultry and fisheries are the notable activities followed in Bio-villages. Besides, organic farming and reliance on bio-gas for cooking are two crucial practices promoted to keep the village ambience pollution free.

Bio-village at Barkurbari would benefit as many as 80 families of the village.
