The State run GBP Hospital in Agartala is continuing to excel and provide high-end medical services to people of Tripura. In its latest successful run, doctors and health workers of GBP Hospital conducted surgery for Cochlear Implant on a three-and-half-year old kid who was a deaf since her birth. And, importantly, the costly surgery and implant were done free of cost.

The kid, Pushpita Pal is a resident of Pahormura village in Khowai and she was deaf since birth. Belonging to a BPL family, Pushpita was also unable to speak due to her deafness. However, her parents do not have financial capability to go for highly sophisticated and costly Cochlear Implant. Every one of Pushpita’s family started to accept her as a deaf and dumb girl.

But it seems, Pushpita’s destiny had a different plan and ‘the doctors of GBP Hospital played to role of gods to our little daughter’, commented grateful father of Pushpita.

The Government of India supplied the device of worth Rs 5.5 lakh free of cost. Eminent specialist of Kolkata Dr Amitabha Roy Choudhury came to GBP Hospital as a mentor for this operation. HoD of GBP ENT department Dr Biplab Nath conducted three-hour-long complicated surgical procedure with the help of Anesthetist Dr Anupam Chakraborty and other health workers.

After completing the surgery successfully, doctors of GBP Hospital is trying to make the kid talk as per the advice of Kerala speech therapist. A test was conducted to examine her hearing capability on December 25 last and she was found doing well. She will undergo another test on Friday next while doctors are trying to ensure that the kid learns to talk.

“We never thought that Pushpita would ever be able to call us Maa, Baba. With the sincere efforts of the GBP doctors, now I believe that she would soon be able to call us. Good that she has started hearing our call. We would remain grateful to the doctors”, said her parents.
