A woman died in Tripura after a herd of wild elephants went on rampage and attacked a passenger carrying vehicle at Malakar para under Teliamura subdivision. The deceased was identified as Khilangti Debbarma (50).

According to sources, a vehicle bearing registration number TR01B4161 was heading towards Champahaur area through North Maharani from Rangiatilla area of Chakmaghat. All the passengers, sources said, were scheduled to visit their spiritual mentor at the location. But, soon the vehicle reached Malakar para area a herd of elephants, according to eyewitnesses, having well-developed tusks, attacked the vehicle.

All other passengers apart from Khilangti succeeded to escape the vehicle. She got stuck in the hired vehicle and the repeated hits from the elephants flipped the vehicle and made it fall into a gorge nearby the road. Soon, Teliamura fire brigade was informed and firefighters rescued Khilangti from the gorge but she was declared brought dead at Teliamura sub-divisional hospital.

However, since the last few days, elephant attacks have become a regular phenomenon for a long stretch that include Teliamura and certain parts of Kalyanpur. According to the forest department, Teliamura, Kalyanpur and some areas located adjacent to these spots are very important as far as Tripura’s wildlife map is concerned as the only elephant corridor of the state has been identified there.

Now, since regular reports of man-animal conflicts are being reported in these areas, definitely there lies an underlying reason. According to local villagers, the elephants only breach human territory when it gets hungry. The locals also accused the forest department of not taking any steps to resolve this crisis more than once every month.

Sources also said that the unabated deforestation inside the deep forests is resulting in such a crisis. But, one the other hand, the forest department has been found making tall claims of using high-tech gadgets like radio collering, bee buzzers and sensitizing people with primary combat materials like chilly powder bombs and all.
