The High Court of Tripura served a notice to the state government relating to the political violence that erupted on September 8 last. In the violence, several party offices of CPM across the State and media houses in Agartala were attacked.

The notice was served following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

Haripada Das, a social activist, filed the PIL seeking the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a sitting or retired High Court judge.

Rajashree Purkayasta, the lawyer for the petitioner, told the media that the state government had not taken any action; no arrest was made in connection with the attacks on media houses and CPM party offices till now.

“We prayed before the Hon’ble Court for the formation of a Special Investigation Team under the chairmanship of a sitting or retired HC judge. We are of the view that if the investigation is done by police, they will not act fairly,” the lawyer told the media.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A.A. Kureshi and Justice S.G. Chottopadhyay conducted the hearing on the PIL and issued the notice to the state government. The next hearing on the PIL would be held on October 4 next, Purkayasta said.
