Saraju Datta, wife of CPM leader of Tripura late Biren Datta passed away in Agartala on Tuesday.
She was 94 years old.
Saraju Datta played a pivotal role in strengthening democratic women movements in Tripura, party sources said recalling her contribution.
“Saraju Datta was one of the woman activists in Tripura when womenfolk of the State raised voices against social inequality and injustice prevailing during 1951. She stressed the need to unite the indigenous women in Tripura to fight against the then regime”, a veteran woman activist said.
Saraju Datta was a former MP from the State.
Opposition leader and CPM Politburo member Manik Sarkar condoled her death and extended sympathy to the bereaved family members.
In a message, Sarkar recalled his fond memories about the deceased. He said, during the 1968-69 period, when SFI started to spread in Tripura, Saraju Datta became ‘Saraju Masima’ to party workers.
“She never showed any discomfort even as party leaders and workers would come to their house daily. She used greet everyone with a smile”, Sarkar recalled.
Paying a rich tribute to the deceased, Sarkar said, Saraju Datta will remain alive in our memories, always.
Meanwhile, several Party leaders and workers paid floral tributes to the mortal remains of Saraju Datta.
