Student politics took a serious turn at Kailashahar in Tripura as an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activist, Shivaji Sengupta, was stabbed on Friday. The incident triggered communal tension in Kailashahar sub-division.
The injured student leader was taken to the Kailashahar Hospital but as he was referred to GB Hospital in Agartala for better treatment.
Agitating people assembled and started demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and suspension of OC of Kailashahar PS Partha Munda as he and police personnel were reportedly present near the place of occurrence.
The situation became further complicated as a bamboo made boundary wall of a Kali temple at Kubjhar area under Laxmipur Gram Panchayat was reported to have been damaged by the miscreants in the afternoon on Friday.
Both the incidents sparked off serious resentment among the people, following which Hindu Jagaran Mancha and Hindu Yuva Vahini held protests – they gheraoed Kailashahar police station and demanded immediate suspension of OC Kailashahar ParthaMunda. Later, a delegation of the protestors met SDPO Kailashahar Chandan Saha in deputation.
Speaking about the stabbing, injured Shivaji Sengupta said he attended a membership drive at R.K.I located at a stone throwing distance from Kailashahar police station. When he entered the school, a teacher and a section of students reportedly misbehaved with him. However, he had left the school after completing the scheduled works.
He had to come back after being informed that a group of activists from some other students’ wings was creating trouble in the school.
“When I reached the spot again, I found a gathering was there in front of the school and police personnel were also present there. Suddenly some youths gheraoed me and someone stabbed me from the backside,” he told the media at Kailashahar hospital. He gave the names of the youths too.
Though they belonged to a particular community, the attackers were also members of several other political parties including BJP, Shivaji Sengupta said.
Till the last information came in, Shivaji Sengupta is undergoing treatment. Amidst simmering tension in different areas, security was beefed up and police patrolling was strengthened in parts of Kailashahar sub-division to avoid any untoward incident.
