A successful endeavour of ‘bestowing light to the unsighted’ by a medical team of GB Hospital in Agartala have brought smiles for a hapless patient – this time the beneficiary is a 7 years old boy who was almost 100 percent blind since his birth – however, a medical team led by eminent eye specialist Dr Phani Sarkar did the wonder for the boy and his parents.
According to Dr Sarkar, for the first time, such an eye surgery on so young kid was conducted in GBP Hospital.
“We conducted eye surgeries on the kid which was ‘risky’ for a patient of such tender age. Even as minors underwent eye surgeries in hospital – however, this kid is the youngest”, Dr Sarkar said and added, “However, we decided to go forward and conduct surgery”.
The patients from Bagbasha area in North District and his parents are financially too weak to take their son outside of the State. After a lot of mis-attempts, the parents of the boy came to GBP Hospital.
“We conducted a thorough check-up and found that the boy had cataracts on his both eyes since his birth. However, it was not easy to conduct normal cataract operation on the boy due to his tender age”, Dr Sarkar said.
Explaining further he said, for adult patients, a cataract operation is easy. But in the case of a kid, full-body anesthesia is required, which is risky. Further setting the lens on kids’ eyes is a very delicate and complicated matter.
Despite all the odds, we proceeded and conducted the surgery successfully.
“The boy can now see and is feeling comfortable. He has been discharged from the hospital. Parents are happy beyond words after their son told them about what he could see around”, Dr Sarkar said.
