Dr Subrata Karmakar of Tripura came up from a humble family and studied in Teliamura Higher Secondary School. However, studying in a Bengali medium school did not create hurdles before him in succeeding in life. While his success is an inspiration, Dr Karmakar’s keenness to do something for his school that laid the foundation of his successful carrier is also an example of generosity.
Recently, Dr Karmakar visited his batch mates of Teliamura Higher Secondary School and went to the school. While talking to the school authorities, he expressed his willingness to donate Rs one lakh to provide scholarships to the poor but meritorious students.
His father, late Srinibas Karmakar, was a teacher of the school. Speaking to the media, Dr Karmakar said, the fund that he had donated would be used to provide scholarship to students in the memory of his late father.
He said, “there will be an establishment of trust named by ‘Srinibash Karmakar Smriti Puroskar’ which will provide the scholarship from the interest of an allotted amount of Rs 1 lakh”.
He is an example of achieving success through perseverance and determination. His success also signifies that mediums of schools in not important for success.
Encouraging the students of the school, Dr Karmakar said, “I have studied class I to XII in this Bengali medium school, from where I ranked 6th in Madyamik board examination in 1989. Later, I got a scholarship provided by the state government and studied Agriculture Engineering at Rajasthan University. I have completed my M. Tech from IIT Kharagpur and obtained my Ph D from a Canada university.
After completing his Ph. D, he joined Dr. Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in West Bengal.
Dr Karmakar is now serving as a professor and head of the Department of Farm Machinery and Power faculty of Agriculture Engineering.
