Ending all speculations, dissident BJP MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Ashish Saha of Tripura have joined Congress in New Delhi in presence of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday morning.
Tripura Pradesh Congress president Birajit Sinha who was also present during the joining confirmed that both Roy Barman and Saha joined Congress today. He said several other BJP leaders will join Congress after March 10 next.
Roy Barman and Saha resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) on Monday.
After joining the Congress Sudip Roy Barman came down heavily on the incumbent BJP government.
Roy Barman told the media the BJP government has failed to deliver and fulfill what it promised.
Continuing his verbal tirade, he alleged that BJP had suppressed the voice of the people and the media.
The joining has ended an episode that started after Roy Barman was dropped from the State Cabinet. Both Roy Barman and Saha were Congress MLAs during the Left regime. Later they defected to the Trinamool Congress – however, on the eve of the State Assembly polls in 2018, both of them along with others, quit TMC and joined the saffron camp.
After re-joining the Congress, Roy Barman and Saha completed a full circle. However, State BJP leaders down played the resignation and re-joining the Congress.
BJP state president Dr Manik Saha, ICA Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and other leaders asserted the resignation of the two MLAs would not create any constitutional crisis in Tripura.
The BJP and its ally IPFT came to power for the first time in Tripura on March 9, 2018, after ending 25 years rule of the CPI (M)-led Left Front.
The IPFT with eight MLAS is an ally of the ruling BJP, who secured 36 seats in the 60-member Assembly in the 2018 elections while remaining 16 seats bagged by the CPI-M.
