In yet another achievement, GBP Hospital successfully conducted a successful Open Heart Surgery on a minor girl.

The Hospital has already performed Open Heart and Angioplasty surgery on adult patients. However, it is for the first time that a 10-year old girl underwent Open Heart Surgery – credit goes to the Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS and IR) led by Dr Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee.

The girl, daughter of a farmer is studying in class VIII. Owing to financial constraints, she was studying at Amarpur staying in a hostel. Since her tender age, the girl was feeling breathing troubles after brisk running and physical activities. Her father, despite his poor financial condition, tried to take her to Bengaluru for treatment – however, he was unable to manage the required fund.

Meantime, he brought her daughter to the CTVS and IR department of the GBP Hospital recently. Cardiac surgeon Dr Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee examined her. After a thorough examination, Dr Bhattacharjee observed there is no wall between the left ventricle and right ventricle of her heart. As a result, both the purified and non-purified blood were mixing up which prevented her from brisk activities.

The girl was admitted to the CTVS and IR department of the GBP Hospital on February 21 last. A team led by Dr Bhattacharjee, a five-hour long Open Heart Surgery was conducted on her on February 24 last.  The 12-member medical team comprised of anesthesiologist Dr Surajit Pal, Perfusionist (person responsible for operationg heart-lung machine) Sujan Sahu and others.

According to a government press release, the girl is doing well. She is stable and recuperating at present.

The successful heart surgeries in the AGMC and GBP have come as big boon for patients of the State. Earlier, heart patients had to go to other States for such treatment. Moreover, the cost of the treatment in other States is considerably high which prevented many patients from availing treatments for heart-related ailments.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb stressed on pulling down the number of referral cases in other Hospital outside the State and with the Heart-related treatment facilities is showing marked improvement, the outflow of the patients will come down bringing big reliefs to family members of the heart patients.
