The opposition party of Tripura, CPIM held its State Committee meeting in Agartala on Tuesday (Jan 10).

All India Secretary of the party Sitaram Yechury, Politburo member Prakash Karat and the members of the State Committee including party’s State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury and Opposition leader, also a Politburo member, Manik Sarkar were present in the meeting.

The meeting was crucial in the sense that leaders would be discussing issues relating to the upcoming Assembly polls. Apart from the political situation vis-à-vis party’s position in Tripura, the leaders are likely to discuss about who would the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate.

Moreover, the issue of forging electoral alliance with Congress is also an important issue. So long, the CPIM leaders are talking about ‘unity’ between Congress and CPIM. It remains to be seen as to whether the talk of unity takes a shape of a full-fledged electoral alliance in the State.

In 2018, CPIM fought the battle under the leadership of Manik Sarkar. Scenario changed after the demise of the then State party secretary, Gautam Das, in 2021 due to post covid complications and subsequently, Jitendra Choudhury took the baton of the party.

This has paved way for several speculations regarding CPIM’s Chief Ministerial candidate. In recent time, Jiten Choudhury’s statement – there are eligible candidates including me in the party to become the Chief Minister – added fuel to wild speculations.

The State Committee meeting is expected to come out with a clear-cut stand on this issue.

The party leaders will also chalk out a strategy to counter BJP’s aggressive campaign and split of non-BJP votes. Tribal politics will be another crucial aspect that would be discussed the meeting.

According to the party sources, Sitaram Yechury will address the media on January 11 in Agartala and will detail the outcome of the meeting.
