Three Central party leaders of the Congress arrived in Poll-bound Tripura on Wednesday (Jan 11). Besides two media co-ordinators also reached Agartala today.

According to party sources, AICC Observer for Tripura, AS Lovely, general secretary AICC Mukul Wasnik and AICC in-charge Dr Ajoy Kumar arrived in the MBB Airport on Wednesday. Also Nationa Co-ordinator, Social media Durgesh Kumar and Media co-ordinator Wg Crd Anuma Acharya arrived in Agartala today.

Another AICC Observer for Tripura Abdul Khaleque is scheduled to reach Agartala on January 13 next.

After arriving in the city, the Central leaders held meetings with the senior leaders of the Pradesh Congress and discussed organizational matters with a focus on party’s strategy for the Assembly Polls today.

The leaders will conduct series of meetings with the PCC members, District and Block Congress Committee members.

The meetings will come up close on the heels of CPIM national general Secretary Sitaram Yechury’s call for an alliance with Congress and other likeminded parties.

The Congress-CPIM alliance did not work in West Bengal after successive polls drubbing. In West Bengal once fierce enmity existed between Congress and CPIM activists – so also in case of Tripura. However, with BJP expanding its base through aggressive campaigns, the CPIM and Congress are left with no option but to ponder over an alliance to put up a fight against the BJP.

Like Bengal, the idea of the alliance between Congress and CPIM did not down well with the grass root level supporters, in particular, the Congress supporters. Sensing the simmering resentment, party’s lone MLA in Tripura Assembly Sudip Roy Barman made an appeal to the grass root level for not opposing the alliance.

Even as leaders of both the parties are talking about forging an alliance, with election date is set to be announced soon, a decision to this end is needed.

CPIM leader Yechury gave a green signal to the alliance – now the ball is in the court of the Congress.

On January 12, the Central leaders of the Congress are expected to dwell on the alliance issue in details and come out with a decision.
