Ten political parties, spearheaded by the Congress, have called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene urgently and restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
Expressing their disappointment with the Prime Minister’s silence on the ongoing crisis, former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader O. Ibobi Singh criticized the Centre for neglecting the state.
O. Ibobi Singh highlighted that the devastating violence in Manipur and the Prime Minister’s silence serve as evidence of the Centre’s disregard for the situation.
Despite the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Manipur continues to endure unrest and persistent reports of violence, he added. Singh further stressed that had the Central government intervened promptly, the crisis could have been resolved earlier.
During a meeting held at Congress Bhawan in Imphal on Friday (June 9), the ten political parties jointly decided to urge the state government to convene a special session of the Manipur Assembly to facilitate a comprehensive discussion on the ongoing unrest. The meeting was presided over by Manipur state Congress President K. Meghachandra Singh.
Apart from the Congress, the coalition of political parties includes the CPI, CPI-M, JD-U, Forward Bloc, RSP, SS-UBT, Trinamool Congress, NCP, and a local party. This collective effort signifies the Opposition parties’ joint effort under one umbrella over the deteriorating situation in Manipur.
It is worth noting that last month, a delegation from the Congress, led by party President Mallikarjun Kharge, met with President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi to seek her intervention in resolving the Manipur crisis. The Congress Party leaders continue to engage with various stakeholders to address the urgent need for peace and stability in the state. (IANS)
