A violent confrontation between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) erupted on Monday, causing panic and tension in the Jampuijala and Takarjala.
During the clash, several individuals of the warring groups, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Takarjala Police Station and security personnel, sustained injuries. Additionally, a couple of motorcycles were damaged in the ensuing chaos.
The BJP had organized a Karyakarta Sammelon (workers’ conference) at the Bukrui Community Hall near the Jampuijala Block today as part of their pre-scheduled program. BJP sources indicated that their supporters were engaged in canvassing activities within the Takarjala Constituency to ensure the success of the conference.
However, reports emerged that a group of TMP activists had set up barricades along the roads leading to Takarjala and Jampuijala, attempting to obstruct BJP activists from attending the conference. Despite these reported disruptive efforts by the TMP, the conference proceeded as planned.
In today’s conference, State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, Minister Shambhu Lal Chakma, President of BJP Sepahijala District (North) Gouranga Bhowmik, former MLA of Golaghati Birendra Kishore Debbarma, and President of Takarjala Mandal Rabindra Debbarma, along with BJP activists and supporters took part and held intense discussions on the State-Central governments developmental initiatives as well as future plan for the development of the areas under Jampuijala and Takerjala. .
Notably, the conference concluded peacefully, but trouble began afterward. Local sources alleged that a group of TMP supporters pursued BJP activists, chasing them to Hariapara in Takarjala, where a physical altercation ensued. The situation escalated, turning Hariapara into a battleground. The incident prompted panic among villagers, causing them to seek safer locations.
During the clash, OC Rathindra Debbarma of Takarjala sustained injuries, along with three other security personnel, while four additional individuals were reportedly wounded. However, local sources indicated that the total number of injured persons stood at 11, including two security personnel.
Leaders from the BJP who had attended the conference managed to leave unharmed. Nevertheless, local MLA Biswajit Kaloi pointed fingers at BJP supporters, holding them responsible for the violence. Meanwhile, a significant police presence was deployed to the area to defuse tensions. As of now, the situation remains under control, although tension still lingers in the region.
