Tripura government has declared a holiday in all schools and Anganwadi on Saturday due to the heavy rainfall predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha, who is now in Delhi, posted an update on the decision through social media on Friday night.
Under the influence of “Midhili”, Tripura is experiencing rains coupled with gusty winds and such stormy weather is expected to continue till tomorrow.
The Chief Minister also said the state government is closely monitoring the overall situation. He appealed to the people to seek help from the local administration in case of any calamity.
He also assured that the state government would compensate for the damage of crops due to rains.
According to sources, 10 among the 12 scheduled flights were cancelled; only two flights could fly including one in the morning.
The IMD had issued a Red alert for Tripura on Friday. According to the IMD’s prediction, very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the North, Unakoti, Khowai, and West Tripura districts on November 18, 2023.
The IMD has also outlined the potential impacts of the heavy rainfall, including reduced visibility due to intense rain spells, leading to traffic congestion, temporary traffic disruption due to waterlogging on roads, uprooting of trees, and breaking of tree branches, resulting in increased travel time.
The IMD has issued the following warnings:
Damage to vulnerable structures due to heavy rainfall
Partial damage to kutcha houses and huts due to uprooting of trees
Possibility of flash floods due to intense spells of rainfall
Waterlogging/flooding in low-lying areas
Landslides/mudslides/landslips in some locations
Damage to standing crops and vegetables in the maturity stage
Lightning
Dispersion of soil from the field, leading to seed displacement and poor germination of seeds.
