Tripura shares a 856 km long international border with Bangladesh and 47.584 km is unfenced spreading over Unakoti, Khowai, North, Sepahijala, Dhalai and South Tripura Districts.

Among these areas, the highest unfenced area – 37.610 km stretch – lies in Dhalai district covering LT Valley sub division (17.155km), Ambassa sub division (13.385 km) Ganda Twisa sub division (7 km) Kamalpur sub division (70 meter).

The fencing work has been delayed due to several reasons such as land acquisition, terrain, riverine areas, and objections from Bangladesh.

In a written reply, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha who also holds Home Department portfolio informed the Assembly during the recently concluded winter session.

The Chief Minister pointed out, the border fencing work in Tripura has been facing various challenges and obstacles that have caused the delay.

In the Dhalai district, road repairing works to pave way for transportation of engineering goods and heavy vehicles are delaying fencing works. In some areas, international agreements and water flow through Dhalai river have caused delays.

Hilly terrain and Cliffs are main hurdles in the 400 meter stretch in Kanchanpur sub division under North Tripura District.

In Khowai district, water flows in rivers and rivulets are delaying works in 405 meters.

In Unakoti, works could not be carried out in 65 meter stretch owing to objections put forth by the Land Custom Authority and the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB).

In South District, works in some parts of 2.548 km stretch started, but construction of a Gate in Sabroom Dashami Ghat remains stopped.

Works in 6.556 km unfenced stretch are underway in the Sonamura subdivision.

According to Dr Saha, the Tripura government wrote to the concerned ministry of the central government on February 5, 2021 to draw attention to the incomplete work of the Border Fencing.

The State government again wrote to the concerned ministry of the central government on November 13, 2021 to further draw attention to the incomplete work of the Border Fencing.

In addition, the Tripura government regularly reviews the progress of the work of border fencing with the concerned agency, the Chief stated.
