Agartala, August 09: Garia Academy of Gomati district produced a major upset on Sunday. The team defeated favourites Tripura Sports School 3-2 in the final of the state-level Under-17 boys’ Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament.

The victory earned Garia Academy a berth in the national-level competition. The final was played at Ramesh School ground on Sunday afternoon.

Garia Academy Seal Thrilling Victory

Tripura Sports School started the final as the favourites. However, Garia Academy refused to be intimidated.

The Gomati district team mounted a strong challenge from the opening minutes. The players kept the Sports School defence under pressure and fought hard for possession.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the first half. The score remained 0-0 at the interval.

Garia Academy stepped up its attacking intensity after the restart. Their sustained pressure created gaps in the Sports School defence.

The breakthrough eventually came as Garia Academy converted their attacking opportunities. The team scored three goals to secure a 3-2 victory.

Amit Tripura, San Jamatia and Naising Jamatia scored for Garia Academy. Zara Jamatia and Naithak Jamatia scored for Tripura Sports School.

The result handed Garia Academy the state title and a place in the national-level Subroto Mukherjee Cup.

Tinku Dey officiated the final. Organisers held a prize distribution ceremony after the match.

Tripura Sports School Reach Final

Tripura Sports School had earlier secured their final berth with a 3-1 win over West district’s Sunod Foundation School.

The Sports School team had to fight back after conceding the opening goal. They gradually regained control and turned the match around.

Angkur Das, Jara Jamatia and Sachlang Jamatia scored for Tripura Sports School. Amarjit Debbarma scored Sunod Foundation School’s lone goal.

Nandanarayan Jamatia officiated the first semi-final.

Garia Academy Beat Holy Cross

Garia Academy entered the final after edging past Khowai district’s Holy Cross School 2-1 in the second semi-final. Naising Jamatia and Amit Tripura scored for Garia Academy. John Kaipang scored Holy Cross School’s only goal.
